Re: Stocks (making my money work for me)
I think Sugar is a financial advisor, isn't he? He might have some good insights.
I too have been talking/shoipping around for financial advisors. Being a vet, I've been thinking about going with USAA or something.Disclaimer: The content posted is of my own opinion.

Re: Stocks (making my money work for me)
No problem Smooth. If you'd like to PM me, I can send you a simple example of a diversified stock portfolio, along with my approach to rebalancing (which I only do on a given date, once per year for my 401k).
That said, age, appetite for risk, and other very person factors should ALWAYS play a role in how someone approaches the when how, and what of investing.

Re: Stocks (making my money work for me)
Another good read in plain language that's a good start for new investors, and a great reminder for even the most savvy amongst us...

Re: Stocks (making my money work for me)
I agree w/getting into ETF's (exchange traded funds, such as SPDR, etc). Another thing I might look into are dividend paying stocks, such as utilities, etc. They are fairly safe and pay out a dividend to you. Not an expert here. Just know a little and what's worked well for me.
