Interesting. That's kind of surprising. I would have thought in light of that, we would see more teams wanting to see all of training camp and pre-season before making decisions on their aging stars. I guess that its just seen as too cut-throat and inhumane to put their veterans out on the street after all of the rosters are set in stone and they can't get jobs anymore. So the off-season cuts are just courtesies for them.

Also, another thing that's nitpicky: the IR has no cap effect. It only frees up a roster spot. Whether somebody is IR'd or kept on the 53 man has no effect on the cap. The only effect is that if its done beforehand you guarantee his salary in exchange for keeping him under your control (and there might be CBA prohibitions against cutting severely injured players with no severance in training camp).
