TO wasn't first ballot due to his reputation character wise rather than stats.

It's not like SSR has a perfectly clean slate when it comes to reputation/character either.

Re: Steve Smith Sr first ballot HOF?

Just because, I looked up viable HOF candidates coming up:

    Returning Finalists
    Tony Boselli
    Isaac Bruce
    Alan Faneca
    Steve Hutchinson
    Edgerrin James
    Ty Law
    John Lynch
    Kevin Mawae

    2019
    Champ Bailey
    Tony Gonzalez
    Ed Reed

    2020
    John Abraham
    Lance Briggs
    Troy Polamalu
    Reggie Wayne
    Patrick Willis

    2021
    Jared Allen
    Steven Jackson
    Calvin Johnson
    Logan Mankins
    Peyton Manning
    Charles Tillman
    Kevin Williams
    Charles Woodson

    2022
    Anquan Boldin
    DeMarcus Ware
    Devin Hester
    Nick Mangold
    Robert Mathis
    Tony Romo
    Steve Smith Sr
    Vince Wilfork

So Steve Smith would have to be one of the next 25 modern HOFers inducted, most likely. That also includes all the semifinalists and preliminaries from last vote. Again, don't see it happening first ballot.

    Holy crap is 2021 loaded!!

I never realized how stingy the HOF is with WRs. Thanks for all the input.

  6. Re: Steve Smith Sr first ballot HOF?

27 WRs from what the HoF considers the "Modern Era" (post WW II) are in the HoF.
So, that's why Don Hutson isn't listed as he played in the Pre-Modern era where he was technically a Split End, Safety (30 INTs in just 6 seasons) and FG Kicker.

    Lance Alworth 1962-1972
    Raymond Berry 1955-1967
    Fred Biletnikoff 1965-1978
    Tim Brown 1988-2004
    Cris Carter 1987-2002
    Tom Fears 1948-1956
    Marvin Harrison 1996-2008
    Bob Hayes 1965-1975
    Elroy Hirsch (also HB) 1946-1956
    Michael Irvin 1988-1999
    Charlie Joiner 1969-1986
    Steve Largent 1976-1989
    Dante Lavelli 1946-1956
    James Lofton 1978-1993
    Don Maynard 1958, 1960-1973
    Tommy McDonald 1957-1968
    Bobby Mitchell (also HB) 1958-1968
    Art Monk 1980-1995
    Randy Moss 1998-2012
    Terrell Owens 1996-2010
    Pete Pihos 1947-1955
    Andre Reed 1985-2000
    Jerry Rice 1985-2000
    John Stallworth 1974-1987
    Lynn Swann 1974-1982
Charley Taylor (also HB) 1964-1975, 1977
    Paul Warfield 1964-1977

The Mel Blount Rule went into effect 40 years ago in 1978 which opened up the passing game like never before.

Only 11 WRs who played after 1978 have been elected.

Tim Brown - Cris Carter - Marvin Harrison - Michael Irvin - Steve Largent - James Lofton - Art Monk - Randy Moss - Terrell Owens - Andre Reed - Jerry Rice

3 others who played roughly half their careers before 1978 have been enshrined.
    Charlie Joiner 1969-1986
    John Stallworth 1974-1987
    Lynn Swann 1974-1982

As for first ballot HoF'ers at WR in the Modern Era, there have only been 7:
Raymond Berry, Lance Alworth, Paul Warfield, Steve Largent, Jerry Rice, and Randy Moss.
With only Largent, Rice and Moss since 1978.

Is SSSr in the same class with those 3? I'd say no, he isn't.

And he has stiff competition from the other candidates:
    1) Larry Fitzgerald -- might get in first ballot
    2) Isaac Bruce -- stats better than SSSr
    3) Anquan Boldin -- stats comparable with SSSr
    4) Reggie Wayne -- stats comparable with SSSr
    5) Andre Johnson -- stats comparable with SSSr
    6) Hines Ward -- stats somewhat comparable with SSSr
    7) Torry Holt -- 7x Pro Bowler
    8) Calvin Johnson -- 6x Pro Bowler, 3x All-Pro
    9) Antonio Brown -- 6x Pro Bowler, 4x All-Pro, might be first ballot someday
    10) A.J. Green -- 7x Pro Bowler
    11) Julio Jones -- 5x Pro Bowler, 2x All-Pro, same as SSSr
    12) Wes Welker -- 5x Pro Bowler, same as SSSr

Not only are there a dozen others but there's quite a logjam between Boldin, Wayne, A. Johnson, and SSSr (along with arguably Ward).

Forget first ballot, SSSr is going to have to wait quite awhile.

Loved the way SSSr played the game - won't be 1st round HOF and may not make the HOF at all.
