Well, he is a free agent so he really didn't quit the Caps. He just declined his option of a 2-year extension, which was a clause written into his contract that would only be an option if the Caps won the Stanley Cup. Of course, he declined it because he and the Caps couldn't agree to the terms of that extension.

The extension was automatic which is why he resigned. There is no trading of coaches in NHL so teams will request permission to speak with him. Doubt Caps will deny. Caps and Trotz we’re heading towards a divorce all season. He was almost fired twice. He was not allowed to participate in exit interviews last year. The extended assistant coaches and not Trotz prior to season. It is believed that they switched to Reirdens defense during playoffs which is what got them over the hump. Reirden was preferred direction of front office. This was a mutual separation.

I would suspect that as well.
