    R.I.P. Keith Jackson

I used to love hearing him calling football games. He was outstanding calling baseball games too.

' Among his broadcasting accomplishments, Jackson was the first play-by-play voice of "Monday Night Football" when the program debuted in 1970. He called Bucky Dent's home run against the Red Sox in 1978 as well as Reggie Jackson's three-homer game in the 1977 World Series.'

I will definitely miss him. He was the voice I heard nearly every weekend of my youth. I learned a great deal about college football by watching his broadcasts. It was especially cool to watch him cover winter sports in the Olympics.

Jackson retired some time ago but it's been a rough year for sportscaster goodbyes. The younger sportscasters don't compare -- they can't -- the environment won't let them anymore. The new guys are bloggers and talking heads... play by play is more of a thankless job.

Keith Jackson was the perfect college football announcer. It just didn't get better than him. RIP
