I think there needs to be a combination. The US is far too diverse and massive for a full-on, government-mandated/supplied health insurance. I would support single-payer system, but only if there were private healthcare orgs competing in a free market for those that do not want government-issued health insurance. Other countries that have government-run healthcare have their fair share of problems as well. Example: in the UK, you could wait for several months for surgery. It also significantly waters down the talent of medical professionals because they're not making as much money anymore, so why spend all of that time and $$$ in medical school?

The problem is that the US Government is a overweight slob of an organization that spends money just to say they spent it. They employ tens of thousands of people that are barely qualified to flip burgers and they have a ridiculous amount of frivolous expenditures. Example: The Pentagon recently has come under fire for spending $28 Million on digital camo uniforms for the Afghani police and the fucking camo isn't even the right color for the Afghan terrain. Total waste of $28 mill.

When the US Govt gets their gluttonous spending under control, then, and only then, will we as a nation be able to have reasonable discussions about social welfare programs paid for by taxes.

So would you see it as something like how now when you're retired, you have Medicare for your basics, and then supplementary plans are available, or more like the government is another player on the health exchange front?

I would say gov is another player, but primarily for those who economically cannot afford it.

My understanding of single payer isn't that the government is running your health care. They just process the paperwork.

Looks like McCain is stalling the passage of the "skinny" repeal bill. I hope he sticks to his guns on this.

He did. So did other GOP senators.

I say good. Not because I like Obamacare, but because I think that the GOP needs to stop trying to employ leftist tactics and ram through a shitty bill now with intentions to pass it later.

Take the time and create a bill that makes sense. Get some bipartisan agreement. Then, pass a better bill.

Well, I imagine it would be like the insurance company now, so it's still between you and your doctor with the caveat not every possible treatment is covered.

I do wish there was some mandate that gave the consumer better insight into what is covered, what isn't, under what circumstances something is or isn't covered (emergency situations, for example), and the actual cost of care relative to what the consumer pays insurers.

Yeah. Doctor's offices and especially hospitals make it pretty much impossible to gauge what insurance may or may not cover what if time and what it might cost.
