Side-note: I really appreciate everyone taking part in this discussion as this is such a touchy subject in today's society. But the first solution to any problem is acknowledging there is one. A lot of us will disagree but that's what makes these conversations so important. It's just sad that in today's society when a cop kills someone, the first questions are about race, not even the actions causing the situation.
I mostly said that just because I don't have the statistics. I also know that some of the statistics that are used come out are surveys, which aren't always reliable.

Basically, I don't think there's any objective way to say race plays a role in general. It would be subjective and vary by police force. Again, 5% rule.

But I have no doubt there are some out there.

That is ridiculous. There is no reason possession alone should land someone in prison.

What about possession with intent to distribute?

With actual intent, or just being caught with a large amount?

I guess that's the tricky part. How much is enough to warrant "intent"? I know states have different amounts as the threshold for that, but it's pretty subjective unless the person is a known dealer and/or has been caught in the act of dealing previously.

Yeah. It's a lot easier when someone is caught actually selling since then you know it's not their personal use. Also to some extent depends on what you're selling. I would definitely support harsher penalties for selling heroine or oxy vs say weed.

Well I think marijuana legalization across the board is inevitable.

This is true. Just a matter of time at this point.

The number is pretty small. 3.5% small.
Let also not forget that there's a good chance that there were other charges involved and they were pled down to only possession.

3.5% of 1.3 million is still like 35,000 people. That's a lot. I felt the overall population seemed high as well though.

Out of an adult population of 250 million. With at least 10 percent admitting they use illegal drugs.
