Re: Best Teams in NFL History
They put the 1968 team in at 23rd
no mention of the 1958 team which included six future Hall of Fame players and its Hall of Fame coach Weeb Ewbank.
RAYMOND BERRY. End.
JOHNNY UNITAS. Quarterback.
JIM PARKER. Guard/Tackle.
LENNY MOORE. Running Back.
GINO MARCHETTI. Defensive End.
ART DONOVAN. Defensive Tackle.
Six freakin starting hall of famers on the team, toss in the HC and no mention?
The 1968 team had 3 Unitas, Mackey, Ted Hendricks, and also the coach Don Shulaat one point of my life I was exactly Pi years old

Re: Best Teams in NFL History
I enjoyed the piece, but I always like Tanier.
Also realize that he was picking one year's team to represent an era for that particular team – so for example the '84 Niners stand in for the '81 to '85 years, etc.
Not sure where Tanier stands on the '58 Colts, but one of the things he talks about with the '67-68 team is the defense.

Too young for the Raiders, but the other 2, yup, agree.
I'd add the 14-2 Giants from '86.
Yeah, they didn't have any WRs, but back then you didn't need them. Not when you had a RB like Joe Morris going off like he did that year. And that defense...LT in his prime.
Same with the '85 Bears, but everybody remembers them because of that D.Last edited by PerpetuallyBored74; 06-05-2017 at 07:18 PM.

Re: Best Teams in NFL History
Yes, with that offense. A criminally underrated offense at that, considering the fact that they were on a 400+ point pace in the other 11 games that year. Overall, they were a middle of the pack offense that year in both points and yards. They did have below average (but not terrible) passing efficiency, but they also had one of the very best rushing attacks in the league that year with Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes.
As a team, the Ravens more than doubled their opponents in points during the regular season and more than quadrupled their opponents in the playoffs. They had one of the highest Pythagorean win totals of all time and are one of the few teams of the salary cap era to win every playoff game by double digits.
They aren't at the very top, but they do belong in the top 25.

Re: Best Teams in NFL History
I was 7 when that Raiders team played. It's my first real memory of football. They were there the ultimate bad guys that all my relatives neighbors rooted against. But they always found a way to win. My fondest memory is of Ken Stabler running all over the place and launching the ball down the field to Biletnikoff and Branch and Casper in the middle.
That team is why I always think of John Madden as a coach first and a TV guy, video game guy, commercial guy and every thing else second. 40 years later and I still remember watching those Raiders. I have a real emotional connection to that team. It's probably what turned me into a NFL fan.
