What's the plan to fill out the offense?
First time post here after a long time lurking (seeking refuge in talking football after that brutal O's collapse last night) ...certainly been an interesting, and somewhat surprising, couple of days. And quite a demonstration of our dogged dedication to BPA, for better or worse.
Although I like each player drafted (with the possible exception of Wormley) quite a bit on their own merits, we have unquestionably left a bunch of needs unaddressed on offense. Rather than start another thread complaining about that, or lamenting Dean Pees (there's already plenty of both around here, it seems), I wanted to try to generate some discussion/ideas on how we move forward.
There are three primary gaping holes that we can't necessarily count on filling in the last rounds of the draft:
- Center
- RT (though possibly this is a guard vacancy if we flip Lewis or even Yanda out to RT)
- WR
First, a couple assumptions: I know we've found players in these rounds before that could fill these gaps, but we can't exactly draft a player at one of these positions in even the 4th round and just assume they will plug and play this year. So, my thought is that we'd want to add a veteran to at least compete going into camp. I certainly hope we draft against these needs, but just don't think we can count on that player.
Also, I didn't list fullback even though we don't have one because I think this could actually be a relatively easy late round or UDFA fill.
Here is a list of remaining free agents, and it's fairly uninspiring:

Boldin, Floyd, Cruz, Dunlap, Mangold are some common names, but anyone else on there move you?
So whatcha think? How do we fill these voids, presumably primarily using remaining free agents? And, most importantly, do we have the cap room to do it (I know there is a cap specialist around here, and would be most interested in his take on whether or not we've got the space to sign against each of these needs)?
Thanks y'all

They probably are going to make another run at Mangold, and likely stand pat in UFA. Probably will pick an OL or WR really late. The OL pick probably will have a shot to contribute as we've had a lot of success with 4th/5th round offensive linemen historically.
I don't think any other impact offensive skill guys are in the cards.Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

We will be picking over other teams scraps. I sure hope Mallet is ready to go. Joe won't last the whole season behind this line.

Re: What's the plan to fill out the offense?
Thanks for the thoughts....I do agree that we take another run at Mangold, and he becomes the first post-draft priority. I bet we try to substantively fill one of the line slots (center most likely), then try to muddle through the other line spot with some combo of a 4-5 rounder and the options we have on hand. I would be very surprised if probably Lewis or possibly Yanda is not our RT week one in Cincy.
Though I feel like it's a bit intellectually lazy to keep coming back to Q, I do think he would be a perfect complement to what we've got at receiver given that we haven't added anyone in the draft. A possession guy to work the middle would be good. Hope we can mend fences and squeeze him in somehow.
Not ideal, but with health and a little luck, hopefully we can have a passable offense...

I think Floyd is our best bet at WR. Mangold at center. Thinking they gotta take a linemen in the 4th but we will see. Still gonna be more cuts (browns just cut Barnidge, not that he fits here but that was a move I think no one saw coming).
