    OT: Need some help here

Way OT, but it's offseason: I got some really bad news yesterday. A very good friend of mine just became very ill. No details were given, but it does not look good. They annually rent a condo in Florida for 4 months, but came home early for 15 medical appointments.

The stink of this is that this woman and her husband lead an incredibly healthy lifestyle, no smoking, do not drink, and are completely meticulous about their diet & exercise routines.

Anyway, here's where you fine folks can help them out. After the doctor visits, they are heading to Germantown, MD to visit relatives. The husband asked me if I could recommend some retreat-type short vacation spots within a 3-4 hour drive from there, maybe somewhere in Western MD or NVA. He didn't seem interested in the shore, as I think they know people in Chincoteague.

I'm pretty much out of the loop since I moved out of town and spend all my down time in OC, so if a few of you could recommend some nice spots for my good friends, it will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Rocky Gap used to be great place. On I-68, on the way to Cumberland, It's recently been "improved" by adding a casino, so I can't tell you if its hotel & cabins are still retreat-like.

When we used to camp, we'd sometimes stay in State Park cabins. Most of these were of good quality. Avoid the dumpy Federal cabins near Camp David. see http://sixsuitcasetravel.com/blog/20...family-cabins/
In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T came in fourth, behind ML King (3rd), Abe Lincoln (2nd) and Homer Simpson (1st).

Deep Creek Lake, though it's going to stupid cold up there right now.

Hope things turn around for your friend. Prayers headed your way!

Sorry to hear about your friend. We used to go down the Shenandoah Valley around Luray, VA. Lots of wonderful secluded cabins for rent, and great wineries nearby if they're into that sort of thing.

Also, this place is convenient to where they'll be. http://oleminkfarm.com/1_bedroom_luxury_log_cabin.html

If they want to live a little higher on the hog, this is a ridiculously nice B&B in Taneytown. Kind of a wedding factory on the weekends, but during the week it's spectacular. The wife and I have stayed there many times. I recommend The Cottage. http://www.antrim1844.com/

Another nicer/higher-end place - have not been there, but it comes highly recommended by those who have visited in the summer/fall.

I second Rocky Gap State Park or Deep Creek. I currently live in the Cumberland, MD area (damn Steeler Country!!!) which is 20 min past Rocky Gap and about 45 min short of Deep Creek and frequent both places. Both are incredibly beautiful in different ways. Although it is February, the forecast says a high of low-to-mid 60s from this coming Saturday through Monday and then supposed to hover around the 50s-60s the next week. Rocky Gap would be less than 2 hours from Germantown and Deep Creek probably around 3.

My thoughts and prayers are with your friend and his family.

Rocky Gap is still a cool place. The hotel and cabins are relatively the same since the Casino has been put in. The Casino is typically slow this time of year so I would assume the whole park to not be as busy as it would during peak times.

Really appreciate the tips and especially the prayers. I believe I have enough information to pass along.

I may have to check out a few of these sites myself. See a few of the signs on the highway, but am always in a huge hurry to get to OC.

    Thanks again for your ideas.

Parker dam is cool if central PA is an option. My wife's extended family goes there pretty frequently. Basically cabins in the woods.

Thanks. I forwarded all of your tips and they were very appreciative. Are going to pick a spot when in Germantown. Also got a good report on few tests on his wife that came up negative, but she's not out of the woods yet.

    thanks again to all
