Well, he's tying his future to theirs so...
Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

His fatal flaw as a head coach - inability to hire/fire coordinators when necessary.

But at this rate then, should just making the playoffs enough? With all the time they have wasted and the list of mediocre seasons piling up on Harbaugh's resume, a 10-6 scratch and claw to the sixth seed shouldn't cut it.
