    I am not so sure. Ray's incident followed Rae Carruth murdering his pregnant girlfriend and the player from St. Louis killing someone driving drunk. There was a strong media-fueled public backlash against what many saw as millionaire athletes getting preferential treatment by the law.

    I am not saying that race was not a factor. I just don't think it was the only driving factor - and maybe not the primary factor - in how Lewis is misperceived to this day by many.
