I'm not sure he was ever really a consideration for the front office. I know some fans wanted him, but the FO wisely selected the first HOF inductee in franchise history.

Modell was hot for Phillips and there was a lot of fan talk about taking him, as well as talking heads. Many mocks had him as our pick. Ozzie set the bar high right out of the box.

Damn, DrUnk I was thinking maybe I vaguely remember something about some running back in the first draft. And you break out the pdf with the whole sordid tale of disaster narrowly averted. Nice!

My pal from the Main Street Tower water hole is a little off tonight.

I posted this story a million times. Art did want to draft Phillips, so
did most the fans in Baltimore but there was no way Ozzie was gonna do him.

Phil Savage told Art do you want to draft someone who will make you bail him out of jail in the middle of the night or someone who will let you sleep every night.

Art finally let Oz make the final decision while most of the fans at
the Ravens first draft party at the downtown Sheraton booed him while I laughed my ass off. I knew it was going to be Ogden.

The rest is history as Phillips ended up in jail in short order and
JO became the best LT ever.

This is what drafting the BAA is all about. JO didn't even start at
LT because we had a big good line that came over from Cleveland
but someone left and JO moved right over.

Phil told that story to us at Nest 1. Ozzie was never going to
draft the troubled Phillips.
