Steve Smith Sr. = Anquan Boldin Replacement
All the heartache over letting Anquan Boldin go. Looks like we got Flacco what he needed - another pair of sure hands who can get those downs and TDs:happyanim

Re: Steve Smith Sr. = Anquan Boldin Replacement
They're really two different guys playing different positions but I get the point.
Just for giggles, think about what it would've been like to have them both on the team at the same time....

Re: Steve Smith Sr. = Anquan Boldin Replacement
I have thought about that every week watching Smith Sr.
Our offense would begin to have that bludgeon everyone attitude.
Smith Sr. is a leader, where Boldin was lead by example.
I actually like Marlon Brown and how he brings some physicality to the position as well.
And I really like his height. The more he plays, we may see him take that Boldin role.
So, Boldin and Smith Sr....we can only dream...
But Smith Sr and Brown...ok, we can do that.

Imagine Boldin and Smith Sr, with Derrick Mason in the slot.

Re: Steve Smith Sr. = Anquan Boldin Replacement
Boldin's size made him good on 3rd downs and in the red zone. Smith is way more fun to watch in the open because well, he actually gets open.

Steve Smith is a more complete receiver than Boldin, IMHO.

Re: Steve Smith Sr. = Anquan Boldin Replacement
I've always thought that, no disrespect to Anquan. I still think about what Smith did to the Bears in the 2005 NFC Divisional Playoff game where he flat out destroyed their secondary
(12 rec 218 yds 2 TDs), the Panthers didn't have a real number two WR alongside him since Muhsin Muhammad signed with the Bears in 2005.

Re: Steve Smith Sr. = Anquan Boldin Replacement
We would face different coverages. With those three, only Smith is a remote possibility of getting deep, and he's not the burner he once was.
Even though Torrey and Jacoby haven't had much production, you still have to account for them getting deep. Torrey in particular has beaten several DB's deep this year. It has mostly been incomplete or pass interference, but you still have to respect deep part of the field.
As much as people want to punch on Torrey and Jacoby so far this year, I'm betting that they are a big reason why SSSr has had so much room to work underneath."Chin up, chest out."

Re: Steve Smith Sr. = Anquan Boldin Replacement
I'd put Boldin in the slot...
and IMO, SSSR> Boldin.
SSSR can actually get open. Boldin simply catches the ball when not open.
SSSR is a master of running routes and sitting down in soft spots.
They both have killer hands, and fight for the ball.
But I really think that SSSR , And Torrey on the outside, with Boldin and Pitta handling the over the middle stuff would be the best mix of players we could assemble. Add in a healthy, younger Ray Rice and Juice with Kubiak as the coordinator and the current line plus Monroe... that would be a virtually unstoppable offense.
