Sliding didn't help Trent Green. Staying in the pocket didn't help Joe Theisman. Its a rough sport. When you have 300lbs guys running full speed into 200lbs guys something is going to give. Usually the 200lbs guys bones.

The point is to reduce risk, not eliminate it. As you said, it's impossible.

Joe Theisman played in 163 consecutive games including the SB throwing from the pocket before going down on that fateful Monday night game. Check out his rings in the pic.

Johnny U's TD record which stood for decades until Brees just broke it came from staying in the pocket from the early 50s til the early 70s.

Like said, the idea is to protect the QB by minimizing hits, not eliminating them. Unitas couldn't comb his hair from arthritis sustained from all those games.

Here's the famous pic of Unitas throwing the ball vs the Giants in the 58 Championship
    game - from the pocket.

Note the bodies knocked on the ground by that famous pocket.

Re: Don't forget Ngata's hits on RG III

There was one play where a guy hit Unitas not only late after the play but he jumped on his back while he was lying on his stomach. He was flagged but Arty said he should have been banned.

Unitas got up and went in the huddle and told his tackle the famous Jim Parker to let the guy in. Jim said huh? John said just do it.

So Jim let him in and the guy had a big smile on his face as he was closing in on John when suddenly Johnny threw the ball right in his nuts
at point blank range and the guy went down.

    He never bothered Unitas again.
