Sad but true
Re: Panthers trade for Raiders' WR, Louis Murphy
Louis Murphy, 0 career punt or kick returns.
I think people are looking at htis worng. In Jones, we drafted a PR/KR that can also play WR. If we had traded for Murphy we would still have to make a move at PR/KR. I don't think they want Ed Reed or webb back returning, and I know I don't want David reed back there. So those options aside, we have a couple unproven rooks, Laquan Williams and WHOM? We needed a solid, vet return option, and that's what we got.

Hopefully that changes this year if Jones, Doss, or Williams figure things out.
I doubt it will much because we're still banking on Pitta and Dickson, not to mention Joe's comfort level with Rice who is obviously very dangerous himself.
Re: Panthers trade for Raiders' WR, Louis Murphy
Dennis Pitta is really our slot #3 receiver. And tbh, I am good with that. Would be nice to have an actual true #3 WR like Tandon Doss step up though.

How about Doss or Asa Jackson who were both very good returners in college? When Jackson was drafted all you heard about was how he is a return specialist. Before Jones became available you would have to think that these 2 along with David Reed were going to compete for the job.

Exactly. Not to mention that there has been no indication that Murphy was available back in May when they signed Jones.
Sorry, but this really isn't a case of picking one over the other. They signed Jones to fill a need, at a time when it was unknown that Murphy would become available later, so it's not like they had their choice of which one to sign.
Had they passed on Jones and Murphy never become available or were outbid for him, what then?

Exactly. Jones is here as much for his KR abilities as anything else. If he fills the 3rd WR spot too, great. If not, he's still a valuable acquisition as a KR.

I don't think the plan was to go into the season with David Reed ont he roster, or to have no PROVEN returners. Liek you say, there are some option, but I think those are best considered backup options, unless they surpass someone(Jones) in camp.

Maybe. Or maybe more with several totally unproven, young WRs trying to man the 3rd WR spot.
Again, let's just wait and see what happens before predicting what is going to happen......
