I mean after the draft I would think the exact opposite. How many tackle jobs are really out there right now? I mean he is essentially being asked to play RT after playing LT most of his career.
People may think it's not a huge deal but this team still has hole particularly as it relates to pass rushing.

Hey, Harbaugh wants a revolutionary offense. This could be the first one in history built entirely around the Hail Mary.

I think that is a point that seems to be getting missed....even though folks are screaming every day about needing to be more balanced. How many plays last season wound up being "running plays" because defenders were in the backfield as soon as Lamar got the snap. I don't think the team will ever be a high-volume passing offense, but it would be nice if on the plays they need to or decide to throw, if the pass protection can hold up for at least 2.5 to 3 seconds.

Like the player hate the price.
$7M a year for a 6-year starter and 2-time Pro Bowler? Seems to be about the going rate. The only way you get such a guy for less, is if he's coming off a devastating injury and he has to sign a 1-year "prove it" deal. Then you get rock-bottom prices; but much more of a performance risk.

Alejandro Villanueva pass-blocking stats since 2019:

Yeah the Ravens really want to improve the passing game. No excuses for Roman in 2021.

EDC isn't stupid. If this was the only starting job on the market, he would have a good sense of that going into the negotiation. He was almost certainly bidding against others. Add in Stanley's injury and the fact that there literally are no other LTs on the market, let alone a guy who's made 90+ starts there. Again, EDC needed this guy and AV's agent knew it.

not a fan but I guess they can give him help. Let's see how things pan out, it's still very early

caveat that with the fact that he had to hold the block about 1 - 2 seconds. All they run are quick slants and screens

This scheme is going make run blocking easy for him.
He was already a good pass protector on as LT being a good pass protector at RT is generally consider easier at worst the same. I can’t imagine why he would be worse at RT then LT.
To me, his value as a backup LT, as well as starting RT, is also a big plus.

Reverse Caveat: It's easier to pass block for Lamar Jackson than ancient Big Ben.

Thats a fair point, but thats within structure. Roethlisberger still plays out of structure a lot and holds onto the ball longer than he should do.
The same could be said about playing RT in this offense. We have the most lineman friendly system in the league.
