Nice post 52! Good news for the new year . Age was going to catch up to the Steelers eventually anyway, but it looks like the cap will kill them first. They can rebuild around Ben and be competitive again, but it sounds like next season they'll be a shadow of the current team.

They are going to have to really purge this off-season and hope that their young guys can step up to the plate.
James Harrison could likely be gone as well.
Hampton, Hoke, Smith, Farrior, Ward, Essex, Starks, Wallace, Clark, and possibly even someone like Keisel could get the boot.Disclaimer: The content posted is of my own opinion.

There is enough age on that team that they will be able to keep their younger guys. Last year the Steelers also had a huge cap number, over $20 million at one point, and figured it out without losing any significant parts. This time though they are going to lose some good defensive starters. At least it looks that way at this point.

Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
Things are not as bad as they seem for the Steelers next season. We have young players ready to step into many of the holes that will come from FA cuts. We got two very good DB's this past draft, a starting OT and a first round DE who is coming along very nicely (Allen, Brown, Gilbert, and Heyward). Sylvester has been groomed for the past two years to take over for Farrior/Foote, and we could probably get by for a year at NT with McLendon/Hoke if necessary. Hopefully draft an OG in the first round and move Willie Colon to OG on the other side should help our line considerably. If Ryan Clark does get cut (unlikely) Ryan Mundy should be able to step in and do fine.
The Steelers are top notch in drafting/recruiting rookie FA's (Antonio Brown 6th round pick; Willie Parker and James Harrison undrafted). Basically the complete opposite of the Washington Redskins. The Ravens of all teams should know this because you modeled your franchise after ours, which is why you have been and will continue to be successful, same as the Steelers.

Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
Traditionally the Steelers have been good at the draft, but not so much in the past few years. It's come back to haunt them, and is why they have so much older, dead weight on their roster.
Another concern has to be Roethlisberger. His style of play, and the number of hits he has taken could be taking their toll.

I hadn't known the cap situation was quite this bad for Pittsburgh.
On the other end of the spectrum, don't the Bengals have acres & acres of cap space going into next year?
And would the Ravens cap situation fall somewhere in between?
Makes one ponder the future of the AFCN, especially in light of Cincy posting a winning record and making the playoffs with their young squad this year...

Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
Ravor posted this in another thread yesterday...
Once they account for their RFAs and EFAs, take on the escalators to Flacco's contract and account for any incentives possibly earned this year (Gurode, Ricky, McKinnie) they aren't going to be anywhere near $20M under.
I've seen an estimate that the Cap is going to be around $125M. The Ravens will be able to carry over approx $4-5M from this year to increase that number, but they presently (as of late Sept) have around $108M counting against the 2012 Cap, which is only for the 34 players that are currently under contract for 2012. Even with Foxworth coming off of the books ($5.6M savings), once they account for the above, much of that Cap space is going to disappear (and quickly).
$108 million on the books for 34 players in 2012.
Cut Fox that goes to $102 million.
Add in all EFA's,RFA's and draft picks you are probably at about of $114 million (guestimate). Under the cap by $10 million or so.
So in comparison, the Steelers will be around $152 million, Ravens around $114 million. And we have $5 more million to work with we didn't use last year, that they don't because they restructured players and played with their cap to get under LAST years number. So we can go to around $126 total, while the Steelers will have to stick around $121 million total.
Those numbers aren't exact but are probably pretty close.Last edited by 52decleetzu; 01-06-2012 at 08:17 PM.

(sigh) all this just warms my little heart!
thx for the info and analysis! just another reason to love this board.
it's great to be a Ravens fan!!!"Nothing stops these Baltimore Ravens. Beat them, injure them, shove them to the bottom of the standings, drag them into a hostile environment and mount a big lead, and they just keep trudging forward like nothing fazes them." (Bleacher Report)
