    Nope.

That's all I have to say about that.

If this guy hadn't "come out", nobody would be talking about him.

How often have people not talked about the SEC Defensive Player of the Year heading into the draft?

All Conference players are ignored all the time. Hell, how many times have we seen the Heisman winner get ignored? Going back 22 years (since the last two winners haven't been drafted yet) and 10 Heisman trophy winners weren't drafted in the top two rounds. Most fell below third.

I get what you're saying, and I understand completely. But Sams wasn't considered more than a fifth round choice before he came out and that was after he won DPOY.

If Sams were a first round talent, that's one thing. But he isn't. He's a situational player at best, and that isn't worth dealing with the media attention.

    Pass.

In my humble opinion I'd rather deal with that media attention than the media circus of a player knocking his fiance out in a casino but that's just me. If anything that would bring more attention but from a PR standpoint it would deflect the Rice situation a bit and it's been noted that he will more than likely be drafted by a team with a good locker room that knows how to handle the press.

I don't care who you draft, the problems created by Rice aren't going away. Nothing is going to change that story.

Especially when his court date rolls around.

If we go by production hes completely comparable to Upshaw.

    Sam
    48 T 19.0 TFL 11.5 S final season

    Upshaw
    52 t 18.0 tfl 9.5 s final season

there was talk of Upshaw being a top 15 pick at one point because of those stats, were talking about Sam as a late rounder or UDFA. doesnt quite add up to me (drafts were completely different as well). Hes clearly not the athlete that Upshaw is, but that motor has gotten similar production in the same conference. Just seems to be a bigger gap between those two than the difference in athletic ability (neither are quick twitch). Frankly I think Upshaw should have been a lower pick so maybe thats the bigger issue i have than Sam being considered so much later. Either way, I dont see us needing another stiff LB/DE project with even less of a ceiling.

I'm not so concerned by the media attention.

I'm more concerned about him fitting in an NFL level defense. His combine was terrible and he's the textbook definition of a tweener. Not big enough to be a DE, not enough experience as a standup LB.

I think its more about lack of athleticism than experience at LB. If he can add some strength and get up into the 265 range I think hed be alright at 4-3 DE. Thats really the only position I see for the guy and even then im not sure hes a 3 downer. Thats another reason I see him comparable to Upshaw, I think thats his best position as well but he at least has the athleticism to be a 2 down OLB.

I can't say I've seen a lot of him, but his resume is impressive.. That said, when I have seen him, all I really see is another guy like John Simon. I didn't like that pick last year (it was by far the most puzzling pick to me and the one I was most critical of on this board), didn't see any real role for him (and as it turned out, there wasn't one, and I still don't foresee one next year) so I can't imagine how we'd go about having two players like that under contract for 4-5 years.

I wish him all the best, and I hope somebody drafts him and he does well, but I don't see the fit in our scheme.
