Re: Ed Reed: "Ravens know i want to be here!"

I still think that Reed is worth more than 5 million. There are intangible reasons why players such as he and Lewis are worth so much, despite their declining physical skill. Ed Reed still strikes fear in the eyes of the league's top QBs. The only one that has consistently had the 'what ever you want to call it' to challenge Reed on a consistent basis is Rivers. Tom Brady's poor performance in the AFC Championship Game was largely due to his reluctance to make a mistake in Ed Reed's direction. He understands that the ball has to be placed perfectly or it could be a touchdown the other way. Reed is still the only safety with that complete threat.

His ability to diagnose plays is second to none at the safety position. There are times when he knows the play developing before some of the offensive players he is going against. In 2010, teams kept chucking it in Reed's direction and you saw what happened. In 2011, Ben did it out of desperation (Week 1), because he rarely does it and has admitted such several times in the past. They all saw the same result and, for the vast majority of the remainder of the 2012 season, QBs stayed away from Reed.

QBs still fear him enough to hesitate when deciding to throw the ball and place passes off the mark, because they are trying to make them perfect out of belief that they have to. Guys like Earl Thomas are coming up and looking good. Thomas, in particular is a very good tackler. However, coverage wise, Reed is still second to none. Especially, now that Berry is coming back off of an ACL injury.

    Market value is market value.

34 year old NFL players with injury histories aren't worth shit on the open market, that's just how it is. The injury risk is sky high, and Reed can't diagnose anything from the sidelines.

Add that to the fact that most teams would rather have a young guy who on on the upswing taking up a roster spot, rather than a 34 year old hanging on and one wrong move away from retirement, and you have an easy answer to why teams won't pay a 34 year old anything. Hell most won't pay anyone over 30 anything much less 34.

    It is what it is.

Here is the best comparable, really an identical situation as Reed is in...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3942161

According to a source, the contract is for five years and $17 million. The deal could escalate to as much as $27 million if Dawkins can reach some achievable performance levels.

The Eagles and Dawkins were discussing a two-year contract offer when the Broncos entered the picture to lure him to Denver.

In the first two years of his contract, Dawkins is scheduled to make $9 million. Of that total, $7.2 million is guaranteed.
Dawkins was a 5 yr deal on paper but in reality it was 3 years for about $4 million a year with about $7 guaranteed.

That is pretty much exactly what the Ravens will offer Reed.

Oh and BTW, Dawkins never made it through a healthy season after that, and retired giving the Broncos nothing much in the 3 years he was there battling injuries the entire time.

That is why 34 year olds, no matter how accomplished are, are usually bad investments and have an extremely limited market and value at that point in their careers.
