Re: Ellerbe listed as starter next to McClain inside

I wanted Albert McClellan to start at ILB, but the problem with that is then you have to start Kruger at OLb if you do that, which would mean a big day for Foster running down the right side.

It is nearly November, and the guy is still without a team. Obviously what you said is possible, but I was mainly just thinking out loud - why would a player like him still be available? Not that its a bad thing, because it could work out very well for us.

And I doubt hes taking a year off at 32, lol.

    Found this over at kffl:
There are concerns about his age, durability and the fact he is a liability in coverage. Henderson is pretty much limited to being a two-down run stuffer.
That was back in July. Has he kept himself in playing shape since then? Would he be any better than Ellerbe or McLellan in this defense? Answer "yes" to both & between the local connection & never playing in a Super Bowl, things might get interesting. (Though I have to admit, if anyone had contacted him it would probably be all over the sports sites by now.l)

McClellen is better on the inside but Kruger is not good at setting the edge and McCellen is so its better to leave him there with Kruger coming in as the pass rusher. Upshaw is set on the other side and will probably stay there when suggs gets back. Then Do you move McClellen inside? my guess is that if the run defense improves they leave it as it is and McClellen is a back up if not he takes McClains spot.

Think a lot of that depends on what kind of load Suggs can handle when he gets back.

Oz is either a genius or something else entirely. Hoping we get a game-changer stud LB in the draft.
Mclain (5th year) and Ellerbe (4th year) have both been in this system playing right alongside Ray Lewis for years. You make it sound like Ozzie just grabbed these guys off the waiver wire. Nobody had ever heard of Bart Scott (undrafted) before 2005, when he filled in for the injured Ray Lewis. Scott even went to the probowl that year.

Continuity goes a long way, and we have that with both of those guys. Good job Ozzie. Next man up. They will bring athleticism to the field that 37 year old Ray didn't have anymore.

Now if Joe Flacco goes down and we have to roll out the Tyrod Taylor show, then i might get a little mad at Oz.

Well I was right on holding Foster under 100. That's about it.

Ellerbe had a good game today I think.

Yeah, Ellerbe looked good enough to start. Besides Sizzle and Ngata, Ellerbe looked the best on our defense. Pees is still asking too much from our LBs in coverage, but Ellerbe covered as well as anyone could expect, and in general he looked good against the run.

Bart Scott made the pro bowl in 2006...when we had the 2nd best defense in our history.

Frankly though, I don't think either guy measures up to Scott seeing as we have had to use so many people to replace Scott...a guy who many continue to ridicule as if he's been a bust since moving on to New York.

Ellerbe did have a good game...I think he is showing a lot of the fire and passion that we've wanted to see since his rookie year.

Where the hell was McClain though?
Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

Hopefully Upshaw picks it up but honestly I wouldn't be too upset if the team dumped the rest of them next year. No Bart Scotts, JJs or ADs in this group
