Re: Ongoing Flacco Contract Negotiations (Merged)
RavensRule, I think, is just trying to say that even though the circumstances are different with a QB contract, that shouldn't be held against Flacco, especially when the owner has come out and referred to the idea that signing him to a mega contract crippling their ability to sign other FAs, "A load of crock". You didn't hear people saying that Suggs should take less, so that they could sign a better pass rusher opposite him. You didn't hear people saying that Reed should take less, so that they could sign a better CB. You didn't hear people say that Ray should take less so that they can sign a better NT (Before they drafted Ngata). The circumstances that a QB contract takes up more space, shouldn't make this a difference case in perception, because this has been a well understood circumstance that the league has been through many times over. Those type of contracts didn't stop Peyton Manning or Tom Brady from winning division titles, over and over and over. We'll live, and Steve Bisciotti intimated his feeling as much.
However, personally, I would not take Suh over Ngata. I would, however, take Calvin Johnson over anybody."Please take with you this final sword, The Excellector. I am praying that your journey will be guided by the light", Leon Shore

Re: Ongoing Flacco Contract Negotiations (Merged)
Thank you. The double standard being applied to Flacco has been discussed at length, but it apparently is still alive and well. What more does anyone need to hear than the owner himself coming out and saying that talk of Flacco's contract preventing the Ravens from signing other players is a crock? Yet people are still trying to peddle that crap. I swear...I had to double check to see if this was 24x7 or Sunspot.

Re: Ongoing Flacco Contract Negotiations (Merged)
I had no problem with the Flacco debate, its the fact that he's so ready to ship Suggs off after one down year because of multiple injury issues, that never means you should just cut him like that. He did after all play most of the year, and helped us win a SB title.

I think it's going to be difficult to get Ryan to sign a deal until he gets a look at Joe's.
He knows that Joe is about to set the market for this generation of QBs (as compared to the Bradys, Peytons, and Brees contracts which were for the 30+ crowd) and I think he'll want to base his deal off of what Joe gets.
Weird as it is for some Ravens fans (and virtually all nationwide fans) to accept, but Joe is the new benchmark for QBs.My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging. -Hank Aaron

Re: Ongoing Flacco Contract Negotiations (Merged)
I don't see why, Atlanta ain't paying him more than Joe. If they did, it'd be the worse decision they've made since trading away all of those picks for Julio Jones. Jones is a very good WR, but A.) Ryan doesn't have the arm for him half the time, B.) They only won one playoff game in the two years since he was drafted and C.) There are several areas that need work on that team.

Re: Ongoing Flacco Contract Negotiations (Merged)
If that's true, it's pretty disappointing IMHO.
I know posters like Wiked think the contract is done, but from my view, getting these big contracts done early is not the Ravens MO.
Virtually every big contract/extension they've done comes at the last second...I fully expect us to have to use the exclusive tag on Joe and we won't be in the market at all...Joe's deal will get done on the last day.
I hope I'm wrong.Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

It does not pay to worry about things you can't control. We can't control the negotiations for Joe's contract. He will get paid.
So don't worry about it.

Re: Ongoing Flacco Contract Negotiations (Merged)
It is purely speculative on my part. [And somewhat hopeful]
However, the reason why I feel that way is because even before this past season started, they all knew that they were going to extend Flacco and they all knew that they were going to shell out a pretty penny. They've all seen how good he can become. They watched the comebacks, the long drives to pull out a W in hostile territory, they've seen the durability, and they've seen how far he has come since being an afterthought for much of his collegiate career.
The bottom line: It was never a question as to whether or not they were going to move on from Flacco.
IMO, once the playoffs hit and everything was just clicking (post-Cam), Ozzie and Bisciotti were reaffirmed that their initial thoughts were correct. This was the guy that they were going to go with for the next decade and this was the guy they are going to build around.
I just think that they are all fully prepared to make Flacco one of the highest paid QB's (if not the highest paid) in the NFL. I also believe that they have been prepared to do this since last summer.
I also really have to believe that Ozzie, Bisciotti, and Harbs are not going to cripple this team by using an exclusive rights tag on Flacco or even a franchise tag on him. I mean, they have a legitimate opportunity to repeat and possibly solidify themselves as a dynasty for the foreseeable future. They're not going to jack that up, IMO.Disclaimer: The content posted is of my own opinion.
