apparently it was sent out in error by a local website. The editor just resigned as a result according to SI. Apparently CBS picked this up by mistake. This is awful on so many levels.

    God bless you Joe.

Re: OT - Paterno dies at 85 y/o

Penn State student website Onward State has reported that Penn State players were notified of longtime head coach Joe Paterno's passing via email, and CBSSports.com went on this report. Paterno, 85, had been receiving chemotherapy as part of his treatment for lung cancer.

However, Paterno family spokesperson Dan McGinn told a New York Times reporter that the report of Paterno's demise is "absolutely not true," and Jay Paterno tweeted that his father "continues to fight." Onward State has since retracted their report.

Had a feeling that report yesterday was pretty close to the truth. My guess is some hospital worker saw him getting last rites or something and reported it out, then CBS ran with it.

Just a sad ending to a very strange series of events. We may never really know just how complicit Paterno was in this scandal now. Legendary coach who you were always wondering how much longer he could coach, then he's fired in November and passes away just two months later.

It is just sad that the man, for all he has done in his life, had to go the way that he did.

This touches on an issue with many of the elderly who continue with their professions. There is this feeling amongst them that if they stop working, there is nothing left to do except pass away. Then, there is another feeling that once they enter the hospital, they'll never come out. As much as some around them try to push them out, the reality is that more often or not, they are not fools and they tend to be right.

Richard Pryor once said, "You don't get to be old being no fool".

The editor of the campus newspaper first reported it. That's where CBS got their story.

The editor of the student paper has since resigned over the gaffe.
