I remember a few weeks ago on 1 Winning Drive you could hear him on the bench saying he wants to play press, implying he's not playing to his strengths.
Really he said that? That's interesting because that would play to his strengths. Problem is that press coverage will get exposed if you can't generate a pass rush. Let's hope Suggs' return means more press coverage in the future.

Jimmy Smith is just another in a long line of high draft picks that hasn't quite lived up to his billing. Every team has them. It's possible he may improve, but I'm not holding out any hope for that. He would already be balling by now.

Carrie Williams is not a starting CB on a top quality D. Too soon to call Jimmy a bust, but it's time to worry a bit. Worse, Webb has now had a serious injury to each leg. How good will he be when he comes back?

Now that Webb will have had ACL surgery on both knees, I think the Ravens have to start viewing him as the long-term replacement for Ed Reed, rather than a long-term shut-down CB.

Almost ready to label this guy a bust.. Only thing saving him is this is his first start of the season. He looks like another cary Williams.

I think it was Gunther Cunningham who said in Smith's draft that these big tall CB's can't play off coverage because of their hips...ironically, he pointed out Nnamdi as the only one that could do it despite playing press man 80 percent of the time in Oakland

And it's not like it has to be man if he presses...it's ok when we play cover 2 to have him disrupt routes.
This, he isnt an off man or zone corner...couple that with the fact that he doesnt have enough experience to truly read the QB, learn tendencies on WR's, etc. and its a recipe for disaster.

We will all see if he has what it takes to succeed in the NFL over the rest of the season. Getting Suggs back is huge, and he should get better and better each week, which will take some pressure off of Smith and the other CBs. Putting pressure on the QB changes everything, just ask Flacco today.
Its not just this game. He's sucked since he's been here. Pressure from the front 7 helps most corners, but Smith is totally overmatched out there and will continue to get beat no matter how much pressure we put on the quarterback.

Williams shouldn't be a starting CB on a low quality D. Seriously, I think that Oher and McKinnie could cover receivers better than Williams and Smith.

[QUOTE=pslholder96;507186]I think it's unfair to judge Smith prematurely. He still a "rookie" given that he missed a few games last year and was also further back on the depth chart. The next 9 games will provide a good sample of what he is and what he's not.[/QUOTEi

This may not have been his worst day so far as a Raven. He stunk it up bad @ San Diego last year. The [very short] book on him will continue to be the double move, until he overcomes it. This season will be huge for his development, but at some cost to the Ravens. Webb is a devastating loss for a secondary getting precious little help from pass rush.
More press coverage, please (from Williams, as well) Certainly worth a try w/ Jimmy: he was drafted for size & strength. If he's bumping more, it might be easier to resist the fakes.

He really needs to step it up. With Webb lost for the season, Smith needs to get his act together.

The problem is that he doesn't have an act to get together. The Ravens just have to face the fact that they whiffed on a first round pick.
