Priests ordered to read anti-Obama letter during Sun Morn sermon
I posted on the RCP thread that OBY lost the Catholic vote. They voted for him and he thanked them with the contraceptive thing.
Now the Bishop is ordering the priests to read an anti OBY letter during their sermons this Sunday morning.
The election usually goes by whom Catholics vote for and it looks like OBY blew away another support group.
No wonder the race is so tight.

Re: Priests ordered to read anti-Obama letter during Sun Morn sermon
Did the Catholic's vote for Obama in 2008? I was under the impression that most Catholics voted for McCain.

Yes Dade, OBY got 54% of the Cath vote to
45% for McCain but I was wrong about them always determing the race. Nixon, Reagan and Bush won w/o their votes.
I should re-phrase that to they effect many of the presidential out comes like in 08.
Right now Cath votes are tied just like most
of the polls 46-46% which is amazing since the
hierarchy is ordering the preists to read that
anti OBY letter.
Me thinks their membership likes me paying $10 pr mo for their condoms-lol.
I remember a big argument over on scout years ago when Bruce Cunningham got on me for saying that most Catholics voted DEM.
I said I grew up in a Catholic neighborhood in Govans a few blocks from St Mary's church on York rd and all the kids parents were Cath and they all voted DEMs.
EVen now all my neighbors here are Cath and they all vote DEM. All the people in my office that were
Cath voted DEM. Someone said I'm not Cath and I'm a GOP.
I said if I go up to St Margaret's church in Bel Air and take a poll most of their members will be DEM.
I was right.
I posted above that the DEM usually gets MDs
elect votes. That's because MD is a Catholic
state founded by the King. They were persecuted
and sought a place here. Many of them were
Torries during the Revolutionary War because they owed their allegiance to the King for giving them a home in America.
The Puritans ran them out of MD and then left and the Caths came back.
30% of the members in Congress are Catholic but there was only 1 Cath prez - JFK.

Re: Priests ordered to read anti-Obama letter during Sun Morn sermon
Here's a great history of their voting and activities in politics. Al Smith was nominated for Prez in 1928 and was defeated by Hoover largely because he was Cath. It's mentioned in
this link.
I wish this link was around 10 years ago during that argument but the internet wasn't as advanced as it is now.
Wiki was considered a terrible source but is much improved. This info is spot on.

Re: Priests ordered to read anti-Obama letter during Sun Morn sermon
More accurate thread title: Catholic Bishop Orders Priests to Violate Federal Law.
By using his position as a church leader to influence his flock's vote, this guy is putting the tax exempt status of the Catholic Church at risk.

Re: Priests ordered to read anti-Obama letter during Sun Morn sermon
Gotta agree with you Spam. That is a more accurate title.
The church in all denominations can get whacked by IRS for preaching
politics in the pulpit. They can also lose their tax exempt status for that and preaching vs homosexuality even though the Bible says
God denounces it.
I read a link that said a lot of ministers are going to preach politics
anyway.
Ok, here's that link. This is just another attack on the church and
taking our freedom of speech away. If you don't like what the preacher is preaching, just leave. I've done that many times.
If OBY wins, we're to the left of center and socialistic/communistic.

Re: Priests ordered to read anti-Obama letter during Sun Morn sermon
No church can lose it's tax exempt status for preaching against homosexuality. The quote I posted laid out the rules for tax exemption. The only limits on speech are in regards to endorsing specific candidates and devoting excessive time to influencing actual legislation.

Re: Priests ordered to read anti-Obama letter during Sun Morn sermon
Yea, you're right but I read that they could for preaching
vs it. I'll have to look for the link but i read it.
Same with Christian schools.
Wait a min, that might have been just in California. I'll have to
look it up.

Re: Priests ordered to read anti-Obama letter during Sun Morn sermon
Here's a guy requesting IRS to srcutinize a church for preaching vs
homosexuality under the exempt law. He's just requesting it asking
for possible IRS scrutiny.
My church never mentioned politics. Once the pastor said it was great that the President (Carter) of the U.S. was teaching Sunday School this morning.
And once the pastor of my church as a kid said IKE was a Christian
because he was a Presbyterian-lol. I laughed at that one even though I was a kid.
But that's all I remember about politics in the church. My pastors
stayed away from it.
