Re: Way Too Early 2013 Draft/FA Thread: Fixing the Defense

At this point, outside of a QB or RB, I think they'll take the best player available regardless of position.

The reality is that other than QB and RB, one could easily argue that they could use an upgrade, youth, or depth at every other position.

OT - Oher entering last years of his rookie deal...resign? KO is a rookie...probably not a LT though.
OG - Yanda is solid. Jah looks ok, but is he better suited at OT? Harewood is a good depth player.
C - Birk is old and done. Gradkowski is a developmental player. Who knows if he'll ever be a starter.
WR - Torrey has a bright future. Boldin is entering a very expensive contract year, Jacoby has a $4 million dollar cap hit next year and is just a #3/return specialist, Doss has injury issues, Thompson is a UDFA, and Streeter is really RAW.
TE - Pitta is an excellent route runner and has great hands. He sucks as a blocker though. Dickson isn't good at blocking and has inconsistent hands. Bajema is a depth player only who is a mediocre blocker.

DL - Is Ngata ever going to be healthy for a full season again? Can Cody learn good technique? Can Pernell McPhee return to the form he showed last year? Can Art Jones be a consistent every down player? What is Tyson's ceiling? How much does Kemo have left in the tank?

OLB - Is Upshaw an every down OLB? Will Kruger be resigned? Can McClellin be an every down player? What is the deal with McAdoo?
ILB - Ray will be 38 years old. Ellerbe is a good player, but has trouble staying healthy. McClain is a run stopper at best. Ayanbadejo is a role player on D and a ST's player.
CB - Webb coming off a 2nd ACL injury. Jimmy has been inconsistent. Cary likely won't be resigned. Graham is good, but may be too expensive to keep. Asa Jackson is relatively unknown. Chykie seems like a decent young player. Chris Johnson likely won't be here after this year.
SS - Pollard was extended, but SS depth is lacking right now.
FS - How much longer can Ed Reed realistically hang on with that shoulder/neck injury? Is Christian Thompson someone who could realistically start? Is he a SS or a FS?

See what I'm saying? So, I think that next year's draft will be a lot like this one for the Ravens. They'll stay put if the guy they want is there, but because of the depth at DL and pass rusher, they'll probably be able to trade down and still get good value in the 2nd round.

LT and ILB are the biggest needs IMO. Keep an eye on Kevin Minter out of LSU, second round projection right now. I'm liking Eric Fisher lately too, I haven't heard or seen him have a bad game so far.

Btw Wicked, I'm not sure if it's fair to form an opinion on Reid yet, he could end up being terrible and replaced by Bobbie Williams, or he could end up being a break out player at guard. He has only started 2 games in his career, lets wait and reevaluate him after some more games. And Yanda is more than solid, he's arguably the best guard in football right now.

Mike Iupati would disagree with you.

Yanda is very good, but he isnt perfect. My point was that other than him, there could still be a lot of moving parts on the OL.

Iupati is also surrounded by way more talent on the oline than what Yanda is. But whoever is better, Yanda is still an all pro guard, possibly the best guard in franchise history, so hopefully Jah can be at least solid on the other side, so hopefully we will be fine. Center may be a concern.

Center absolutely could be a concern.

No decent centers hitting the FA market this year. Brad Meester has always been pretty good and underrated for Jacksonville, but I'm pretty sure he's retiring at 36.

The only centers that stick out to me in the draft that you could say "day 1 starter" are Barret Jones (even though he'll probably be drafted to play guard), Kahlid Holmes (has had his issues against bigger and more elite talents like Loutelelei), and someone I wouldn't mind in Mario Benavides, or possibly Travis Frederick (really big for a center, looks like a huge guard, lacks ideal mobility to play C in the NFL though).

I've been combing Draft info to find top G's that have played C, but I can't find any evidence.

C is a continuing concern for me...two years running now, and you two are right: The cupboard is bare in the Draft and FA.

At a minimum we need that 3 man wall I believe (C-G-T (either side) or G-C-G)) to optimize our offense. We can get there in 2 moves but there will be a serious leap of faith involved. Generally, I think that if you are going to pay your QB and RB $125-140M then you should invest the picks necessary to fortify your OL

Barrett Jones is someone who could end up being the guy the Ravens covet. He's got great size (6'5" 315lbs), he's mobile, he's smart, he's a good run blocker and he has good footwork as a pass blocker. The Ravens really seem to value multi-positional guys, so someone like Jones who has literally started at least one game at LT, LG, RG, and C may be exactly who they're looking for. At worst, he's a guy who could probably start at LG (assuming Gradkowski pans out at C) or start at center if Gradkowski doesn't work out. IMO, Barrett Jones may be the most safe pick the Ravens could make if he is there when they are picking. At that point, it comes down to value and whether or not they feel that he'll slide down a few picks and maybe they can get a team like Kansas City or Jacksonville to trade up.

What's the skinny on Da'Rick Rogers? I hear he's another talented, but troubled WR with number 1 potential that could be had in the mid rounds.

    Dude has 1st round talent.

Honestly, if he hadn't gotten in trouble at Tennessee he potentially could have been the top receiver taken. He's got great size (6'3" 209lbs), runs solid routes, has good hands, and nice speed for his size. He isn't a "speed" receiver, but his ability to break tackles and pick up YAC had a lot of folks comparing him to guys like Andre Johnson and a young Anquan Boldin.

He seems like he is a pretty immature guy though. He committed to Georgia, then backed out. Then after committing to Tennessee he was arrested for a bar fight. Tennessee suspended him indefinitely back in the spring and over the summer he admitted that he had failed a drug test, which is why he was dismissed and ultimately transferred to a D-2 school.

I could see a team like Seattle taking a gamble on him in round 1. Frankly, San Francisco could be a good spot for him too with Jim Harbaugh being more of an authoritarian type of guy.

He's a borderline 1st/2nd round prospect at the moment. If he has an outstanding combine and does well in his interviews then he could definitely shoot up the draft board.

Right now (IMO) the top WR prospects are:
    1. Keenan Allen, Cal, 6'2" 215lbs
    2. Tavon Austin, WVU, 5'9" 175lbs
    3. Justin Hunter, Tenn, 6'4" 205lbs
    4. DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson, 6' 205lbs
    5. Terrence Williams, Baylor, 6'3" 212lbs
    6. Stedman Bailey, WVU, 5'10" 190lbs
    7. Ryan Swope, Texas A&M, 6' 200lbs

Quite a few potential Ravens on the field in Atlanta...at least based on need. Should be some great POA battles!

none of the USC guys or are they not entering draft this year?
