    Suck comes in threes

    Three things that suck.

    1. Our special teams, save the kicker and punter. The coverage sucks, the returns suck, and the protection on punts sucks. This was an issue last year and it is worse. How does Rosburg still have a job?

    2. The refs. Some of this is to be expected but many, many times these guys mis-spot a ball by as much as a yard or even more once or twice. This is going to be bad if this carries over into the season. It makes me appreciate the normal officials a lot more.

    3. Pre-season TV coverage. Did anybody actually see our first running play of the game? How about on the one kickoff return when the returner was not even in the shot until he was 15 yards or more (not exactly sure, didn't see him catch the ball) into his return? Or the one Rams' catch where Jimmy Smith fell down, the camera guy just stopped following the ball and we only got to see the catch on a terrible end zone angle replay. The direction is horrible and the camera work atrocious.

Rosburg is a head scratcher. ST has been pretty dreadful on coverage....not just this year.

Billick was an offensive genius with Cavanaugh at the OC helm.

There is no doubt this mess will come back to haunt several teams at some point.
There's going to be some teams that miss the playoffs that can look back at a call or two and say that that call cost them the game and a playoff spot.
I said a couple months ago when this official thing started and some people were glad they were getting replaced.... "Be careful what you wish for".

The worst part is the speed of the game is going to increase even more now which will cause even more problems.:grbac:

You could do that every NFL season.

True, but not with some of the blatant screw ups these cats are pulling off, and not to the quanity either.

Some of this stuff is beyond embarrassing.

It's almost every game every week there are screw ups that are inexcusable.

Having a ball punted and downed by a player on the kicking team at the 4 yard line does not constitute a touchback.

That kind of crap would never happen with the normal officials.

These cats are interfering with the flow of the game as well by calling ticky tac crap too often in fear of missing a call and being scrutinized too heavily as well.
They can't get the calls out quick enough, spot the ball quick enough, etc.

Honestly I think that if they had to ref the entire season and they didn't bring up the fact that they are replacements it wouldn't be that bad.

The real problem is that because everyone knows they are replacements, and it's impossible not to know since the media mentions it every second, every single call will be questioned.
This game is way to fast for even the regular refs, but when mistakes are made people just shrug their shoulders. The media accepts it, the players accept it, and the coaches accept it in a way.
But the mere fact that these guys are new will set everyone on edge.

Yeah, it's not like the old refs ever spotted the Sqeelers 2 extra yards on a critical 3rd down in a game against us before.

    Oh, wait! Yes they have.

The Ravens have the most to gain with having replacement refs because the Sqeelers have the most to lose, like the help they normally get to add 2-4 wins to their record each year as a result of "human error" by the dirty crooked refs.

I say give the new refs a fair chance.

Obviously Godell & Co. believe being a zebra requires no skills and just about any jerk that can buy a black & white striped shirt is NFL zebra material. While the Zebras that have been locked out could stand improvement, they are head and shoulders better than what we have been witnessing. Last nights group was about 1 play away from totally losing control of the game.

I tend to agree with him.
People are giving the old refs far too much credit. They sucked too.
These new refs are worse, but realistically, by week 5 or 6 they'll be up to the previous level of sucktitude. They are clearly(to me) making progress already.
