Re: OT: CB Joe Haden facing 4-game suspension

So, why is adderall a banned substance if it is prescribed by a physician?

That just seems dumb to me. Now, if they test for adderall and they DONT have a prescription for it, then I can see the violation.

I believe the issue is he didn't get league approval first.

And because this is a suspension, this is infraction number two for him.

    Gotcha.

    That makes sense.

True. You don't get 4 games for breaking the substance abuse policy the first time. That's the second punishment. Do it again and it's a year.

I thought I read that first offense under the drug testing policy was 4 weeks suspension.
Second 8 weeks and third a year?

So doing a quick check maybe the 4 games because it's considered a "performance-enhancing" drug as stated on this article about Giants' Tyler Sash getting busted for the same thing.

"On Tuesday, the N.F.L. suspended Sash for the first four games of the season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances."

    http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2...or-four-games/

I also noticed that a couple players have had the suspension reduced in this article about Steeler's Weslye Saunders.

    http://www.timesonline.com/sports/st...medium=twitter

"“I’m hopeful Commissioner (Roger) Goodell will lighten up on me,” said Saunders, who claims he didn’t know Adderall was illegal in the eyes of the NFL.

In May, Giants running back Andre Brown had his four-game suspension for using Adderall lifted. And Texans punter Brett Hartmann, who also tested positive for Adderall, had his four-game suspension reduced to three games."

It used to be the 1st was a warning and not made public, 2nd was 4 games and 3rd a year. They could have changed it with the new CBA but I have not read or heard anything about it being more punitive than in the past.

That's the way it is for the drug and alcohol policy - no suspension until 2nd offense.

For the "performance enhancing" drug policy, it's an automatic (first time offense) 4-game suspension.

gotcha. Didn't realize they were separate.

Re: OT: CB Joe Haden facing 4-game suspension

It should be noted that a lot of times lately the players agent will "leak" the story that it was "just adderal, a prescription see how unfair it is for my client", when in reality he tested positive for something else.

The NFL due to privacy policies are not allowed to comment on any drug suspensions, so the agent and player are free to say/make up whatever they want to put their client in the best light after a failed test. NFL can't say a damn thing even if they know the player/agent is lying through their teeth.

Pretty much every single suspension the past few years has been blamed on "prescription adderal", but amazingly only two have been reduced.

    Kind of convenient IMO.
