    Big Apple bans Big Gulps

Now there's a word I can relate to - "ban."

NY's mayor is ready to enact the city's new law banning Big Gulps,
big slurpies and large sodas from NY's 7-11s as well as large sodas
in restaurants and movies theaters. Small sodas are OK.

It doesn't extend to alcoholic beverages or small cokes or dairy
products such as milk shakes or bottled sodas in grocery stores.

The reason is to fight obesity since so much of NY is obese.

Now who was that Supreme Court judge who said the gov't will make
us eat broccoli? Damn, he knew what he was talking about.

Actually it's not a bad idea for movies. The price of a large coke is
$6 in my theater. For the first time in my life I stopped getting pop corn
and cokes at the movies. It's over $20 for the price of the ticket and
    the refreshments.

Diet Pepsi is my main drink anyway and lately Ive been drinking just
water in restaurants since cokes are almost $3. Back in the 90s it was
$1 for a coke. Hell at the water hole you can get a beer for a
buck on Fri nights but a coke will cost $2.60. It's $5 at the local pizza
shop for a coke and slice of pizza. I can get a whole pizza for $5 at
    Little Caesar's down the street.

BTW, Michelle baby was in NY promoting the ban - of course - since
hubby has destroyed so much of America. Read David Limbaugh's book
    THE GREAT DESTROYER.

Just too much gov't interference but not as bad as France where they
were going to shut down the entire Coca Cola plant because of
obesity and France is famous for its skinny people. NO MAS!

Speaking of Michelle Baby, did you know they're on the outs with
Oprah. Hell, it was Oprah who won the election for OBY when she
announced on her show she was voting for him. Hilly was ahead of
him at that point and that's when the entire country jumped on the band
wagon - on Oprah's say so.

Anyway, Oprah wanted to get in on Michelle Baby's national anti-obesity
campaign and she said no way. Told Oprah she was too fat or words
to that effect and Oprah is pissed.

    True.

    Ruthless these socialists, just ruthless.

Dumbest thing I ever heard. If you really want to fight obesity, educate children. From day one children need to be taught healthly diet choices and don't sell junk food in public schools. If those kids grow up and choose to eat whatever they want and become fat, thats their fault.

Great post Dade and where the hell you been?

I always drank coke as a kid and was skinny as a nail and can prove it with pics but
we played baseball all day. We started playing at 0800 til lunch. then after lunch til
dinner then after dinner til dark in the summer.

In the fall we played football as soon as we got home from school.

Today's kids are playing with X-BOXES and watching DVDs. They seldom go out
so the moms leave plenty of sweets for them in the house.

I posted a link years ago where Georgia legislature was considering taxing obese
people and Congress was talking about it too in the back rooms.

It was funny because someone like Jamal Lewis weighed 225 would technically be
considered obese because of his height even though he was nothing but muscle.

Look at all these football players from 300-350 lbs but today's fat kids are so
numerous in their school system and are actually falling asleep during class.

But taking away my Big Gulp is just like the f*cking liberals taking away oil and
coal. Too much liberalism and it's still not going to stop obesity because there are
plenty of other sweets like candy, pastries not to mention alcohol.

I visited the Busch plant in St Louis once and saw them pour tons of sugar into
huge kettles filled with beer but they didn't toouch beer remembering the
prohibition. Ever hear of pot belly?

Big Gulps are disgusting but they are not the problem with America'a weight problem, they are just another symptom.

It's actually becoming a turn off going out to eat of late. Just look around at the people in any restaurant you eat. 85% are fat if not technically obese.

Who knows how many tablespoons of sugar are in a big gulp. I think instead of banning Big Gulps there should be a requirement to inform people how much sugar is in a drink. I bet a Big Gulp has 35+ tablespoons of sugar? Many would not drink that with that knowledge.

Yea, but I wonder if you can sitll buy diet Big Gulps but I dunno Galen.

Go into any 5 Guys around and count all the people weighing over 300 lbs in there
stuffing double greasy burgers and large fries down their throats. It's what my doc
calls the Great American Epedemic. One of their double cheeseburgers is over 3,000
calories. Large fries are 1500 calories. A large coke is another 1,000 calories.

You're right, a lot of restaurants are empty but that's because of the economy
not people's eating habits. All the foods you buy in the grocery store have labels
on them with info on how much fat and cholesterol are in the product.

That's entirely too sensible a suggestion. The sad part is, many businesses would object to even that compromise as a burden.

good link to sugar totals in soft drinks: http://www.sugarstacks.com/beverages.htm

A Big Gulp has 91 grams of sugar which equals 5.6 ounces of sugar..over a quarter of a pound of sugar. 7.5 tablespoons of sugar or 22 teaspoons of sugar.

....and that is just the regular Big Gulp and not the Super Big Gulp or the Double Big Gulp o the Extreme Big Gulp. I love Coke as much as the next guy but it is really just liquid candy.

Damn, great link Galen. Thanks. No wonder they went after Big Gulps.

I knew it was a lot but not that much. Glad I never had one. I always had diet coke. I'd
be 300 lbs if I drank coke all those years.

When they say 364 calories, usually that's per serving - right? At least that's what the
packages say. That means if you're eating a candy bar, something else I never eat,
that's 364 calories per bite or two. No wonder JOhn Candy the actor died of a heart
attack. He had several candy bars on him every day on the set of his last movie and
ate them every day. Like I said, stopping Big Gulps won't stop the fat kids from getting
    their sugar.

So on a Big Gulp, that's 364 calories per serving or sip - right?

LOL - Here's Michelle baby backing away from her original statements on banning
high sugar drinks. While she still says it's OK on the local level like NY, she is vs
    a national ban on them.

    Uh huh!

The problem is that, just like all liberal "fixes", it's not doing any good. I don't know what a movie cost up there, but down here it's 20 dollars for two tickets, then another 20 or 30 for snacks. So figuring on the average person going once every two weeks, how much of a change in their over all health is this law really making? It's just forcing a free enterprise to follow the whims of a few morons.

Oh, and I'd like to point out that the "obesity problem" isn't nearly as bad as the media wants you to think. According to the little chart thingy, I should weigh 185 pounds because I'm 6'2. Yeah, not going to happen. I weigh 320 pounds and need to lose around 30 to get to what would be my target weight. Everybody is different in their body styles, and basing the idea of obesity simply on weight and height is incorrect.

Hell my son isn't four yet and he's 50 pounds, which is 15 pounds more than the average four year old. According to that chart, he's a fatty but he's in the 95 percentile for weight and off the charts for height, being the height of your average 7 year old. He has to go to a kidney specialist every six months because of his Alport's so we know his weight is right where it needs to be.

I've included a picture of what people consider an obese child.

agreed, BMI is a terrible index. Afterall, Muscle weighs more then fat... Body fat percentage is better, yet still imperfect. As is mentioned constantly, someoen like Ray Lewis(and most athletes) is very Obese based on BMI.
I'm 5'10 so I'm supposed to be 165 to 170. lol. No way. I'm a good 15 pounds overweight, but if I were the 185 I wished I was I would look ripped and NO ONE would think I were obese, unless you looked at a BMI chart. When I first tried WII Fit which is BMI based, they made my MII look like cartman. I do not look anything like Cartman, I just happen to have very large tree trunk like legs from spending my first 25 years of life exercising almost non stop. I still can't even float a little bit, BARELY in salt water(with fully inflated lungs), but my lower half still sinks like a rock.

Hell man, I wrestled in the unlimited weight class in high school and college. I
weighed 185 in the 10th grade but didn't have an ounce of body fat. I was on the
JV and got promoted to varsity when I defeated a guy in scrimmage. He was a SR
and all I did was fall on him and sit on him. Match lasted less than 20 seconds.

I put a kid in the hospital playing lacross just by hitting him hard. It was a clean
hit but I was bigger. No body fat for me til after college when I was working a desk
job all day and got a coke and candy bar every day around 3 pm.
