    Michelin Man? Really?

Dude, I don't know if you've seen what thigh pads are like these days...

Rice doesn't even look like he's wearing thigh or knee pads, but he is. They're super thin and the thigh pads fit into compression shorts, which most players wear under their pants anyway. Same with thigh & tailbone pads and those two pads are still optional and were not included in what the owners voted on.

Nobody uses thigh/knee pads like this anymore:

If it makes you slower then it's going to make the people chasing you slower as well. Should be a non issue although I'm sure it won't be.

It wont make you slower, but I don't see the point in making defensive players wear them. All they protect you from are bruised leg muscles. To me this is just a bunch of BS, we are not talking about any serious injuries here. The head is what needs to be protected, not some bruised thigh. I think tight ends, RB's, and WR's should wear them, but that's it really.

Bone bruises, contusions, stingers, muscle bruises, etc.

They do provide a fair amount of protection from injuries that could keep players out. However, they don't protect against things like ACL tears and whatnot.

Here is an image of what a lot of the players currently wear for hip/thigh pads:

Flacco had a deep thigh bruise toward the end of the 2009 season and it effected his game.

    Yup.

Those types of injuries aren't always enough to keep you off the field, but they definitely impact your performance. Haloti Ngata had a deep tissue contusion/bruise last year as well I believe.

Great Pictures! Okay so I exaggerated just a little. I guess it really comes down to the players comfort level.

It does, but most of the compression shorts (which I also included a photo of a few posts above) have the thigh, hip, & tailbone pads already stitched into them.

I remember the old thigh pads that were basically a foam padding over top of a metal plate that gave it form and they slid into your football pants. Those things sucked and honestly didn't work too much. In college we started using the pads that they use now, which are lighter and thinner, but actually provide more protection because of the nature of the material.

The only reason they can get on the field is because they have better technology to break up the blood clot in the thigh, etc. But I had a deep thigh bruise and I couldn't run for a week. I played linebacker and dude's helmet hit me in the thigh and I did a flip as I was pursuing a RB that had changed direction in the backfield. Crap happens.

GOOD! I've complained about this for years. The NFL would enforce socks but not pads in the pants. Watching guys like Heap constantly get various contusions used to drive me mad. I realize they won't help prevent a major injury, but they do help. AND, the 'slow me down' line is bullshit because nobody has an advantage if everyone has to wear the same thing.

Exactly. But if there is ANY weight to them at all, you might have a few players wearing some fake, lighter gear hoping to gain an advantage.
