Seems like a great move to me. Just getting Webb off punt returns would make the deal a win. When the Ravens didn't draft a WR early you figured they'd be signing a vet. I'm much happier getting a field stretcher like Jacoby than a possession guy in the vein of Housh (Donald Driver was the guy I was thinking about). The combo of addressing LB and OL in the draft + Jacoby is a more appealing combo than having a raw guy like Hill or Randle + a retread LB/OG.

I'm all for Tandon Doss and Laquan Williams developing, but those aren't the kind of guys a contending Super Bowl team can count on.

The Texans fans hate this player, almost ran him out of town
And this was all season, long before the playoff game

    I'm very unsure over this
And even if return duties will be a huge part of his role it's still a lot of money

    Re: Ravens sign Jacoby Jones

Here are my pros/cons for signing Jacoby Jones:

    Pros:
-Solid depth WR move with experience as a starting receiver in the AFC.
-Solid experience returning kicks and punts.
    -Vertical speed & leaping ability.
-Provides flexibility in receiving unit & provides competition for Doss, LaQuan, David Reed, & Streeter.
-Not a locker room diva (from all accounts).

    Cons:
-Plays a lot smaller than what he is (6'2" 210lbs).
    -Inconsistent.
    -Can he shake press coverage?
-Played across arguably one of the best receivers in the NFL for 5 seasons and was average at best.
    -Not a YAC guy.

Here is the biggest con of all though (IMO)...

Cam doesn't and/or rarely uses multiple WR sets. I hope they structured the deal so it allows them to get out of it if they need to because I just don't see him being worth $7mill over 2 years...especially if Asa Jackson or Bob Rainey display some good skills as a return specialist.

I totally agree. Jacoby is a solid retuner and not a 30 or over 30 WR. hes a vet despite the hands hes a speedster and 6'2. I believe he may get 3rd spot. Doss LQ and Streeter our future but right now we on a W.I.N. mentality for 4 years now going on 5. Welcome JACOBY!!

Makes me wonder what the Panthers offered him because according to his agent after being cut from Houston, Jacoby didn't want to go to a team where he couldn't compete to be a top receiver.

Although he does join a winning team with 2 former team mates.

Good point. Maybe Leach & Pollard convinced him to sign here?

I have a hard time believing there wasn't any type of contact or recruiting going on between pollard/leach and jones. Especially since this team could use some speed on offense.

It tells me the Ravens are not happy with the current squad without adding more pieces. There's a lot more FA to go and I'm just a little surprised they didn't wait it out to see who else might be available, but for the price they paid, they must think he's a good addition.

Word. Until we know what the terms of the terms of the contract are, I'm not sure how anyone can criticize the signing.

Heck, I remember last year when people were complaining about the Ravens signing another former Texan to a $2.7M, 2 year deal. That too was apparently a waste of money for a S who was horrible.

Now, most seem pretty excited that Pollard's getting a contract extension.

As far as Jones' contract goes, when a player signs a deal this "late" in free agency, it's usually a one-year, "make good" contract or a two-year backloaded deal. Those type of 2-year deals are basically one-year deals, but provide the player the "security" that if he plays well enough for the team to want to keep him the 2nd year, he gets paid well. It also provides the team the ability to keep the player if they want him (and pay for him) or the option to release him with minimal Cap impact.

It's basically the same kind of deal that McKinnie got last year.

Like McKinnie's deal, it also likely includes incentives and esclators, so the base deal probably isn't $7M.

Reed is likely to start the season on PUP, so that decision will be delayed, perhaps even until next offseason.

Look, I get that he isn't a good WR...but I think the "well, we don't let any WR's develop" argument is bull...and precisely why we are constantly in need of WR's. One would think that if we are just holding back talented players, those castoffs would catch on somewhere else at least be competent with another team.

Laquan Williams has not shown anything, Tandon Doss has not shown anything, Tommy Streeter has not shown anything and David Reed has not shown anything (other being a solid KR who is coming off a significant knee injury and may not be the same guy).

It's baffling to me when we have to rely on any other unproven guy at just about any other position, people are so hesitant to put trust in the replacement, but at WR, it's always "well we didn't let so and so develop".

And let's not forget that there are no other proven KR/PR on this roster that we don't want to expose to injury...David Reed is not a sure thing to be what he was...especially after year one of the torn ACL...remember Ladarius took 2 years to get back to where he was.

    Give it a chance...
Agreed. He's here to return kicks (so Ladarius doesn't have to) and to compete for the 3rd WR spot. None of the other WRs have proven a thing, so there's no reason to not bring in competition. If he proves to be better and wins the 3rd WR spot, then the team is better off. If he doesn't, then he's still an upgrade over what is currently on the team at KR.

    Re: Ravens sign Jacoby Jones

I am sure that during the playoff game after he fumbled that punt I wrote in the game thread the Ravens are going to have to sign the guy when he gets cut over this just as a thanks for the huge gift. At the time though i was kidding even though it did seem quite possible. The diffenece now though is I am glad to see it happen. I was all for giving Lee Evans another chance. Guys who miss that game winner in a big situation are not usually damaged goods IMO. Every once in a while you get a guy like Nick Anderson or whoever it was on Orlando with Shaq and Penny who choked the free throws that cost them a chance at a ring and then was suddenly a 40% free throw shooter even though his 3point percentage was higher than that. but on the other end of the spectrum you have guys like Jordan who missed plenty of game winners before it seemed like he would never miss another. Basically I just want to see what a guy with talent and that kind of motivation does with another opportunity to make a big play in a big game, not saying Jones will pull an MJ. I do think he can provide a lift and big plays to the return and WR game, maybe even be the guy who makes the big play of the year.

Here's a good thought experiment that will remind us why we are on a message board. I know many (myself included) were pumped about "stealing" Lee Evans for "only" a 4th round pick last year...Legit deep threat, proven talent, etc. And we all know how that worked out. For me, he's another deep threat who caught 50 balls 2 years ago, and caught about 10x as many as every Ravens WR combined after Boldin and Smith. And he's a returner which they desperately need.

As for the money issue, that's what Wide Receivers cost. Robert Meachem got $25 mil over 4 years. Eddie Royal got 3 years for $13.5 mil.
