I was going to start a thread on this much earlier today but thought too many posters would take issue with having to link to the sun.

Stories like this are more prevalent then you would think as it relates to athletes at this level (Please research the story of Patrick Willis who suffered a similar upbriningt of abuse and maternal neglect/abandonment). Sometimes it really is true that the only way out of their circumstances is through sports and they can't just be grateful for an education when there is so much more riding on what they do with the sport their in.

I look at my two sons and wonder sometimes how they would be if they grew up as I did. I know how scared I was but somehow I made it through a lot of twists and turns.

I really am pulling for Cary to continue his success even though he very well may get a really good pay day with another team. More importantly, I really want him to heal from the scars he received as an innocent child.

No one should've had to go through that.

Ravens75, it breaks my heart hearing about anyone who had to go through what you and Cary did. I'm really glad you came through things OK, and that you were determined to be the best parent possible, despite all that you went through. I agree, stories like this are definitely more prominent than we know. Cary wanted to tell his story so that people would know they're not alone.

Thank you for writing this. As a survivor and as a black male, I'm always happy when I see higher profile people (especially black men) who have survived abuse and really thrived in their lives, sharing their experiences. It tells alot of boys who are suffering that there can be a good life, success, everything, in their lives.
