Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
It's a fair point, I accept that Corey
After that game many of us felt that Taylor locked down Lee Evans and that Lee was drawing away coverage for the others. And so Lee Evans got some credit after the win
All these weeks and months later it doesn't seem as impressive
I suppose I'm just remembering back to what I thought last September

Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
I didn't know about the ACL
I knew Keisel and Hampton were injured last night but I must have missed Starks
Hmmm, that changes things
Anyway, fair play for all your work on this thread, I find all this salary cap talk fascinating

Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
On the fence....
Larry Foote at Linebacker 3 yr/$9,300,000 2012 2013
Bryant McFadden at Cornerback 3 yr/$7,500,000 2012 2013
Will Allen at Cornerback 3 yr/$4,400,000 2012 2013
Arnez Battle at Wide Receiver 3 yr/$3,900,000 2012 2013
Mike Wallace at Wide Receiver 3 yr/$1,700,000 2011 2012
Trai Essex at Tackle 1 yr/$810,000 2011 2012
Max Starks at Tackle 1 yr/$810,000 2011 2012
William Gay at Cornerback 1 yr/$685,000 2011 2012
Not enough info to make a call on.....
Curtis Brown at Cornerback 4 yr/$2,560,000 2014 2015
Cortez Allen at Cornerback 4 yr/$2,432,000 2014 2015
Chris Carter at Linebacker 4 yr/$2,204,000 2014 2015
Baron Batch at Running Back 4 yr/$2,086,512 2014 2015
Byron Leftwich at Quarterback 1 yr/$1,750,000 2011 2012
Weslye Saunders at Tight End 3 yr/$1,474,000 2013 2014
Stevenson Sylvester at Linebacker 3 yr/$1,332,000 2012 2013
David Johnson at Tight End 3 yr/$1,218,200 2011 2012
Dennis Dixon at Quarterback 1 yr/$1,200,000 2011 2012
Dorian Brooks at Guard 2 yr/$725,000 2011 2012
McFadden is almost certainly gone. He's been a disappointment ever since the Steelers traded to get him back on the team, and during this season he quietly slid down to #5 on the depth chart. He's not going to start, and there's a plethora of young corners on the team who would be better served getting his playing time. I don't see him coming back. On a related note, all those green corners will make it tough to part ways with Gay, especially if you're right about them getting rid of Taylor as well. He's not that expensive, I think they hold onto him.
Cortez Allen has become a fan favorite, and has shown a lot of promise in the playing time he's had. He'll definitely hang around. Brown has been a big asset on special teams, although I haven't seen much of him on defense. Think he sticks though.
Baron Batch tore his ACL in preseason. No one saw enough to make any judgements. I'm not sure what to make of him going into next year. I think there'll be one spot up for grabs behind Mendenhall/Redman/Moore, and it'll be a fight between Batch, and whatever draft picks, udfa's, and camp bodies are brought in. EDIT: I forgot about Dwyer. Yeah, think Batch will be gone then...perhaps a practice squad spot.
Chris Carter only had significant playing time in one game this year (against NE, after Woodley went out) - and he looked very good. No sacks, but he generated a lot of pressure. He and Worilds will be kept as the primary depth behind Woodley and Harrison.
Sylvester is a decent special teams guy, and the only real depth at ILB, so I think they have to hang on to him, especially if Farrior and/or Foote are gone.
Dorian Brooks actually quit during training camp. He's spent the year on the reserve/left squad list (which I didn't even know existed, but according to NBCSports, it does). So there's $725k in savings lol.
Backup quarterback position will be interesting. They'd love to have Leftwich stay on as a long-term backup, but he seems to always be on IR by the end of preseason. He's a waste of cap room if he can't stay healthy. Batch is old reliable, but good lord he has to be near the end of the line, and if he did have to play for a significant stretch, I'm not sure his body would hold up. Dixon has all the potential, but from what I read has struggled to learn the offense, and that's why Tomlin doesn't trust him as anything more than a #3 option. They can't keep dicking around with four quarterbacks every season - a quick way to save some cash is to whittle that list down to 3 or even 2 guys. I think Batch might be cut - he's the least likely of the three to be picked up by someone else, so the Steelers can keep him on speed dial if he's needed during the season.
Give me a little time and I'll use your list to make what I think the roster could look like going into next year. At least my best guess at this time.
EDIT: Thanks for gathering up all the contract info as well. It's nice to have all of that in one spot to look at.Last edited by SteelFaninBMore; 01-09-2012 at 11:29 PM.

To be determined (Definitely not Sepulveda, and most likely not Suisham)
Notes:
** These are two guys that I can see taking hefty pay cuts and/or restructuring to finish their careers here. Both have talked at length about how much they love playing for LeBeau, and Tomlin, and wanting to retire as Steelers. If I had to choose one, Clark is the guy the team would most like to keep - they obviously struggled without him, he's the brains of the secondary, there's no depth, and Mundy is not the guy to take that spot.
Farrior is probably the one who wants to stay the most - he has a year left at best, and I could see him going down to nearly a vet minimum (with some restructed bonus cash). He knows he's not getting a payday anywhere else at this point, and if he's not ready to retire as he claims, his best bet will be to take as little as necessary to stay on the roster. But the team may not want him back, as he's definitely losing a step, the depth isn't as shallow there, and they can hold onto Foote instead.
There's no way Hampton or Taylor would give up any cash, and they'll be gone. Keisel would probably want to stay and be willing to negotiate, but with Hood and Heyward ready to take over, the team likely won't see any need to try to make it work.
*** Willie Colon 5 yr/$29,000,000 2015 2016 - I wouldn't be surprised to see him go away. He's spent the last two seasons on IR, his health is an issue (he should have never gotten that deal in the first place). Gilbert shows promise at RT, and not so much at LT. So I think the team would prefer to keep the younger cheaper healthier option. Yeah, it'll be some dead cap space, but it's not the first time they've done it under Tomlin. In 2007 Sean Mahan was given a 5 year deal, and traded to Tampa in 2008. In 2007 Kendall Simmons was given a 4 year deal and cut in 2009. Justin Hartwig was given a four year extension in 2009, and cut in 2010. Starks was given a 4 year deal in 2009 and cut in 2011 (before being re-signed later on). I really believe they'd be willing to move on from Colon at this point.
That's 41 spots by my count (not sure what that looks like in terms of salary), and the most glaring need will be on the defensive line, particularly the nose tackle spot. Second area of need ILB. And as always the offensive line - LT and G more than anything.

Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
I was ballparking about 12-14 spots would be open earlier so I was pretty close I guess.
You can fill 7 with the draft and I don't know where the other ones will come from, but they will have to be cheap.
It is looking like the last 20 on the roster are going to be very young and inexperienced or filler type veteran players.
One day when I am bored I will crunch the numbers with the salaries and see where it is at for those 40 or so.

Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
Just wasted 20 minutes of my life reading that thread. Good work, 52, but I don't know why you bother. Everything is fine in Pitt. in regards to the cap, and in Bal. we're in deep shit- depsite the fact that we have signifigantly more free money next year and into the future.
P.S. And that Ian guy is a real ass. What is he, British? That would explain a lot.

Re: Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster
I also love the trashing of the Ravens draft picks. Doss is a nothing fifth rounder, even though the same could be said about Wallace (or Brown) after his first year. McPhee and Kindle suck, but Ziggy Hood and Jason Worilds are totally ready to become starters LOL. These people have group cognitive dissonance. I guess I am proud not be a part of any "Nation."
