Stealers cap situation for 2012 a complete disaster

So I posted this in the other thread on the main board, but decided it needed it's own here. Looking like time for a purge up in the Burgh!! And a purge would be putting it kindly looking over these numbers. They were counting on the cap going up $5-8 million and even then would have had to make some big cuts, but it staying roughly the same is worst case scenario for them and a lot of teams in their position.

    http://www.catscratchreader.com/2011...crease-in-2012

According to Charley Casserly, on Sunday's CBS pre-game show, the NFL sent a Grinch like message to all NFL teams last week, that the 2012 salary cap will not increase, or at best only increase very, very slightly. He adds that around 1/4 of all NFL players will be UFA's (Un-Restricted Free Agents) in 2012. This will make for a buyers market for teams that have cap room, driving down players prices, because of less money to go around. Many players may be forced to settle for low price, 1 years contracts, and hope to try again in 2013, when the new TV money kicks in.
The cap was $120.5 million for 2011.
This is extremely good news for Ravens fans, and the worst possible news for the inbredsin western PA who are going to have to cut oh about $35million million off their cap next year JUST TO GET UNDER the $120ish million.

Read all about it here, it is very long but a FANTASTIC way to warm your heart on this cold January night.

It was supposed to be a 5 part series, but I am guessing that after part 3 the writer went into a deep depression that he never came out of. He probably realized after crunching the numbers as he went along how screwed the Steelers are, despite his proclamations stating otherwise in parts 1 and 2.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Pittsburgh fans should be rooting for anything that increases overall league revenue, which would then raise team caps. Per Whetstone on Steel City Insider, the Steelers have “39 players under contract for 2012, at a total cap cost (including dead money) of about $141.4 million.” NFL teams must be in compliance with the new salary cap figure by the start of each new league season, which is generally on March 1st each year, and then have their collective 2012 salaries remain under the cap through the end of the season.
But wait it gets better!! They still have to sign all the EFA's. RFA's etc...
However, assuming that all eight players above are tendered at some level (a strong probability) and that none sign extensions before those tenders that could lower their 2012 cap figures slightly (with the exception of Wallace), the addition of tendering contract offers to those eight players (even before they are signed) will add roughly $11 million to the Steelers’ 2012 salary cap. Moreover, that figure does not include any additional money applied to the 2012 cap that might be needed to lock up Wallace long-term.

At that point, the Steelers would have 46 players under 2012 contract from their current 2011 active roster or injured-reserve list (assuming no other current team members are released or pending unrestricted free agents are extended), accounting for around $152.5, a figure which includes the little dead money on the Steelers’ 2012 payroll. Add in one hypothetical player with one accrued NFL season signed to a futures contract ($465K) and four more at the league minimum and the Steelers would add slightly more than $2 million to their cap figure, which would project to be around $154.5 million for their top 51 players.

Yeah you read that right, the Steelers will have 51 players under contract, costing roughly $155 MILLION!!!

Good luck cutting $35 million of salary cap yinzers to get under!!! With ZERO left to upgrade the team or sign draft picks. Better make that about $40 million you need to shed.

Found part 4 of that series, can't find 5 yet.

    http://www.steelerslounge.com/2011/1...eelers-part-4/

This Is Not Going to Be Easy

First, get three faulty notions out of your head, because (A) the Steelers’ 2012 cap problems will not work itself out like years past; (B) the team cannot just simply cut some aging players signed through 2012 to get under the cap; and (C) even though it would go against their philosophy and would be naïve with their still solid veteran core of players, the Steelers could not theoretically sacrifice the 2012 season just to clear cap space for future years.

The Steelers’ salary-cap dilemmas for 2012 are too challenging and complex for any of those solutions due to guaranteed money already counting against their cap. Instead, the Steelers will almost certainly have to restructure and add years to the contract of Roethlisberger to get under the 2012 salary cap, which will be discussed in detail letter.
It should be noted that the author wrote this before the news about the cap came out from Casserly, and he projected the cap to be $128 million when it is only going to be around $121 million. So they are going to have to find ANOTHER $7million to cut in addition to this laundry list of players in this article.

Another flaw in the writers numbers is what Mike Wallace will get in the form of an extension, which is almost a requirement to help their cap situation. Santonio Holmes just got $24 million guaranteed, and this writer thinks a superior, clean Wallace is only going to get $18 million??? NOT HAPPENING! Especially with Wallace and his agent knowing how dire the cap situation is.

But anyway, here is what moves the writer thinks they will have to make.

    1. They sign Legursky (swing Olineman) and Mundy to long-term extensions.(Mundy is a decent dimeback and serviceable No. 3 safety in Pittsburgh’s scheme, who could also provide a bridge or back-up plan as the Steelers hope to eventually transition from Ryan Clark)

    2. Cut McFadden (save 2.5)

    3. Cut Aaron Smith (save 2.1)

    4. Cut Arnez Battle (save 1.0)

    5. Cut Will Allen (save 1.3)

    6. Cut Hampton (save 5.9)

    7. Cut Farrior (save 2.8)

    8. Cut Foote (save 3.0)

    9. Cut Jonathan Scott (save 2.2)

    10. Cut Ward (save 4.0)

    11. Cut Kemoautu (save 3.6)

Now with cutting all those players they don't just get savings, but they also would have roughly $10 million in dead money for 2013.

Oh and after all that, if the cap stays at $121 million they are STILL over by about $13 million. Not including all the EFA's, RFA's and draft picks.

After that, just about every single player with a long term deal will have to restructure. ALL of them. And they still aren't even close to getting under the $121 million.

Bottom line....the team will have to be gutted and there is no way around it. again the writer here is assuming all things break in their favor, every guy will restructure or sign team friendly deals, and the cap goes up to $128 million.

Others that haven't been mentioned like Clark are going to have to be sacrificed as well, and if you thought the Oline got Jen killed this year just wait until next year.

You just know the Ronney's will find some kind of loophole to get out of this mess. This is something we need to watch closely during the off season. This could end up being the Steelers' Ravens 2002 Great Salary Cap Purge.

Last year they were over the salary cap a week before the deadline but they resolved it fairly easily
Looks like they solved nothing, just kicked it down the road

Keisel will be thirty four coming into next season
His contract isn't exceptionally high but maybe another player on that list
On August 31, 2009, the Steelers signed Keisel to a new five-year contract worth $18.885 million and includes a $5 million signing bonus.
So many old and experienced players there, the team will be unrecognizable next season if that goes ahead

With the huge turnover they're likely to experience, the AFC North should be ours for the taking for the next 3-4 years.

Have we not learned by now to never underestimate the Steelers?
Whether it's injuries or being in cap jail they will find a way to persevere and contend. Watch.

Your right. With their young talent and the kings ransom for Carson, they'll be a fighting us tooth and nail for the division. Hopefully we'll own them like the Steelers "owned" us.

No doubt, but it is different going into next year. If you want a true grasp of the situation just read those articles, you will be convinced trust me. And those are heavily slanted pro Steeler articles written up by a fan.

They have never had to do something like they are going to have to do to get under the cap. Ever. It was already going to be bad if the cap went to $130 million, but they could have managed. In the low 120's which is what is projected they are screwed. They could very well field the youngest team in the NFL next year, with a bunch of low cost fill ins just to get under the cap playing key roles.

I mean they only have 7 draft picks, so it isn't like they can cut 12-14 and just replace them like that. And they won't have the money to sign anything but scrubs to fill the roster, while cutting starters/near starters.

In the article it described next month as "Bloody February", and that is coming from a complete homer. You have to realize when even the Steeler fans start talking like they are now, it is going to be bad. They never, ever talk like that about them. Remember they are God's gift to football and do no wrong.

Just wait until they get bounced from the playoffs and see where the conversation goes within a day or so. Right now they are still in it, and they haven't been paying attention to all the details and just how bad it is.

They don't lose that much cutting all the guys you listed, though, as you said, that doesn't even do the trick and also hamstrings them a chunk for 2013. But in terms of those players, they are all very replaceable. In fact, younger guys would be upgrades on a lot of the older dead weight listed.

But it is nice to know they are hurting. Hopefully Wallace plays hard ball with them to further their misery.

Ozzie has been consistently bringing in young starters over recent years

I know the talking heads in the media call the Ravens old but they look at Lewis and Reed as if they are the only players on the team. Fans know we've lots of young talent on the team

The Steelers draft well in fairness but looks like it's going to be one big purge instead of a gradual replacement. Bloody February is right
They'll be playing with scrubs like the New England secondary lol

On June 18, 2009, Wallace signed a three year contract with the Steelers worth $1.740 million which included a $555,000 signing bonus.
Wallace is a hot name around the league and his agent could get a good deal for him easily. Obvious places being the Rams and Vikings

Going to take some serious coin to lock up Wallace. And he deserves a payday, he is an excellent young receiver
