    Re: Antwan Barnes

As others are saying, he was very one dimentional.
A speed rusher, and when here, couldn't handle contact well at all.
Had no moves except the outside looping speed rush, and was very easily negated if anyone got enough of a hand on him to push him... the loop would straighten out and he would fly past the QB upfield and out of the play. But if he managed to get the corner, he looked like a tremendous player. It just didn't happen enough here to justify keeping someone so one-dimentional.
We traded him (not cut!) at the final roster cuts for a 7th from Philly and used his spot for a more versitle player.
Wish him well, my favorite picture of him was the stretched jock strap tackle of Westbrook for a near safety in Philly.
at one point of my life I was exactly Pi years old

As I said last year and started a 20 page thread on it, it was the biggest mistake they made last season. Releasing a 3rd Down situational pass rusher, which cost us in 4 games they lost late to comebacks, and vs the Steelers in the playoffs. Had they used correctly likely would have won division, maybe homefeild advantage and made the SB.

Thats a WHOLE lot to put on a somewhat decent, one-dimensional player.

Considering they lost 3/4 games last regular season because of lack of pass rush in come from behind fashion not a stretch at all. Cause if they just win one of those games they take division, get a bye and play home game in playoffs. The most important thing in football ala bill Walsh is a good pass rush in the 4th quarter. Ravens only had Suggs, tired by the end of games.

Just saying, imo, its a stretch to think that one marginally good one-dimensional pass rush would have made any difference under Mattisons less than creative pass rushing schemes. Its just as likely that an opponent would have recognized Barnes inefficiency at run-stopping, checked out of a pass, and just run it off tackle to his side on a crucial third down to seal the game

You say this as if they would have been allowed to keep 54 players. Someone else wouldn't have made the cut if Barnes was kept, so maybe some of those games wouldn't have even been close if we gave up big special teams plays or he was forced to take the field at a point where the opponent could just decide to run at him and he gave up big yardage because he was a liability.

There's just way too many what-ifs. It's even harder to draw conclusions considering the Eagles dumped him before the season was even over. Maybe it took getting traded for a ham sandwich then still getting cut to get him to play the way he's playing for SD these days. If he'd stayed, he might have earned a spot on the gameday inactives with poor practice/preparation because he felt he was entitled. We'll never really know.

Plus there's Anthony Allen's potential down the road.

What a joke... You haven't noticed that with essentially the same personnel, the pass rush has been exponentially better this year than last? Barnes or not, we weren't going to be getting to the QB with Mattison's schemes...

They added Kruger to his natural spot and added McPhee, if you haven't noticed. Two upgrades.
