Re: Ravens fans deserve the truth!
The reason they cut Mason was about as obvious as it gets. It wasn't a slight to Mason, or a tactic to bring him back cheaper that Mason didn't cooperate with.
It is the basic fact that Mason and Boldin aren't a good #1 and #2 WR tandem. They both bring mostly a possession game. To challenge a defense, you have to have a true deep threat - a guy whose presence alone will make a safety double think cheating up on the run. Mason is a very good WR, but he wasn't the best fit - the best complement to Boldin.
It wasn't likely that Mason would play second-fiddle to an unproven young guy - he's probably better than any of our young WRs - so you weren't going to see him as a #3 here. I totally agree with this article - the Ravens weren't really pursuing Floyd.
I think it was a "get fast or bust" plan. The offense is capable of being SO much more explosive with Evans. Consider that our 3 and 4 WR sets now have two guys (Torrey S. and Evans) that can take the top off the defense - that has got to create some space for the run and underneath passes.
The big question will be whether the OL can provide enough time for Joe to hit the deep routes.

Re: Ravens fans deserve the truth!
So they'll just let any old guy on this forum, won't they? :) Welcome aboard!!
Mason is also on the back-end to 40. You could see him slowing down and getting hidden in coverage as the season wore on. There is a need for a field-stretching threat on the team and as you point out, Mason doesn't provide it.
I believe Mason was cut because deep down the front office and the coaches know he lost his step. It was time to let him go.
Seriously, I don't believe for a minute that come week 13-14 when the Jets need it, Mason won't be able to deliver like he used to. It's just father time catching up with him.

If the Sun could print articles like this, more fans would read the paper
After 5 years of early exits, the journey is finally complete.

Damn, you caught me. Now you know I only come here to talk shit instead of reading. Can't help it. I'm a product of the Balto. City School System :p
On a serious note, you again proved my point. That article is the reason why we read your website (sometimes exclusively, not in addition to the Sun).
PS-I like numbers. The Jets article breakdown of Sanchez's dropbacks was good. It supported their claim about his 3-step drop plays and how Sanchez performed under pressure.Last edited by SC_Raven_Fan; 08-17-2011 at 12:45 PM.
