NFL Network's Top Ten Gutiest Calls

    #3: Ravens Ditch Dilfer

Rod Woodson talked about how Grbac said "I'm here to make the team better" and Rod sarcastically said "We just won the Superbowl". Obviously we know most of the guys on the team weren't happy that Dilfer was let go.

Many Ravens fans shared that same sentiment!
In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T came in fourth, behind ML King (3rd), Abe Lincoln (2nd) and Homer Simpson (1st).

It was a horrible move to let Dilfer walk, no doubt.

Disagree. It wasn't a horrible move to let Dilfer walk, but it was a horrible move to replace him with Grbac. Elvis was the anti-Trent - more talented, but no heart or guts whatsoever.

Once Jamal and Searcy went down in TC the next year, it really didn't matter who the QB was, but - in hindsight - they would have had a better chance had they signed Brad Johnson instead of Grbac.

Heck, Trent actually turned the ball over more per pass attempt in 2000 than Grbac did in 2001 (or many others Ravens QBs since). The difference is that Trent had a once-in-a-lifetime D to cover up his mistakes. With the D only being pretty good in 2001 (as Ozzie predicted as part of his reasoning for feeling an upgrade a QB was needed), Dilfer probably wouldn't have fared any better than Grbac, and IMO, likely worse.

There were quite a few what ifs throughout the 2001 season.

When you're the defending Champ, there's only one possible outcome that isn't going to be a huge letdown or disappointment. So, when you don't repeat, yes, there are going to be a lot of "what if's".

I've always suspected Grbac had a couples of significant concussions here. Wasn't he pretty tough in KC

The Ravens didn't ditch Dilfer. He was a free agent.

He barely got touched in KC.

Once Jamal got hurt, it was all over. It didn't matter who was back there.
