    Sizzle!

In the wake of a big loss we tend to fixate on anything that's going wrong with the team, but there's a huge bright spot that we're barely talking about.

    Terrel Suggs!

Count me among those who felt that we paid him to much. I didn't believe he would ever return to form or anywhere near a level of play that would justify his salary. Now he's playing better than ever and seems worth every penny. I'll be honest, I still doubt that over the life of his deal he will be able to produce at a level that justifies the price the Ravens paid, but I'm becoming more optomistic about it.

I pulled some stats from ESPN.

YEAR TEAM G TOT SOLO AST PD SACK FF REC INT YDS TD
    2003...BAL 16..27....19.....8....3..12.0..6...0.....1....11...0
    2004...BAL 16..60....45....15...1..10.5...1...0.....0.....0...0
    2005...BAL 16..69....46....23...4...8.0...4...0.....2....38...0
    2006...BAL 16..65....47....18...8...9.5...3...0.....0......0...0
    2007...BAL 16..80....52....28...6...5.0...1...0.....0......0...0
    2008...BAL 16..68....53....15...9...8.0...2...0.....2....86...2
    2009...BAL 13..59....44....15...5...4.5...1...0.....0......0...0
    2010...BAL 12..55....41....14...2...9.0...1...0.....0......0...0
    Proj....BAL 16..73....55....19...3...12.0..1...0.....0......0...0

I added the last row, which projects his stats through the end of the season, rounding off where necessary. With these number he'd be near his career high in tackles and sacks. Of course, this doesn't even account for the fact that he's getting better as the season progresses. Here are some game by game stats.

WEEK TOT SOLO AST SACK STF
    1.........6.....4.....2.....0.5.....0
    2.........4.....2.....2.....0.0.....0
    3.........8.....6.....2.....1.0.....0
    4.........4.....1.....3.....1.0.....0
    5.........1.....1.....0.....0.0.....1
    6.........3.....3.....0.....1.0.....0
    7.........6.....3.....3.....0.0.....2
    8 Bye Week
    9.........2.....2.....0.....1.0.....0
    10........4.....4.....0.....2.0.....0
    11........7.....6.....1.....1.0.....1
    12........5.....5.....0.....0.0.....1
    13........5.....4.....1.....1.5.....2

The bye week makes for a convenient divider.

    Per Game Rates:
    Period.....TOT SOLO AST SACK STF
    Pre Bye....4.6...2.9...1.7...0.5...0.4
    Post Bye..4.6...4.2...0.4...1.1...0.8

Something to celebrate while we all mourn a loss to the Steelers. :)

Note: I got throug this whole post, went to preview it, and realized that the extra spaces were bieng taken out, so the stats were impossible to read. I didn't want to waste my post, so I tried a few workarounds. Nothing easy worked, so I had to do this thing with the dots. If someone knows a reasonable HTML solution for tab indents or extra spaces let me know. I not ever going throug that again!

I wanted to mention one other point. Stats don't tell the whole story, but I'm not a football expert, so I'm leaving it to others who are more knowlegable to share any observations they might have. Has he done things that don't show up in the stat sheet but do help the team? Have these increased in frequency and/or impact this year? Since the bye week? Stuff like that.

    Thanks!

I was king of the Suggs haters, but since the Atlanta game the dude has really stepped it up a notch and a half. It's frustrating because if he played half this well all year our D would be dominant.

He needs to feast on these poor OLs, like the Steelers. Coincidentally, I think he also demonstrated why I think the Steelers might collapse down the stretch. Their massive weakness at OT and in the secondary are hard to mask.

Anyway to answer your question, there was a play on 2nd and 10 where Heath Miller blocked Suggs, then released. Suggs took a step to rush Ben, then realized what happened and dropped back to cover Miller. Ben, about to release, saw this, and threw a bad pass to the 2nd reciever, pretty much just throwing the ball away, creating a 3rd and long...

The guy is good. Has been since his Jr year, but it is great to see him playing more like a DE than an OLB and getting after the Qbs more often.

Hallelujah. Enough negativity and BS. The defense and pass rush have been so much better the last two games and I fully expect them to keep it up the rest of the way.

If RavensNTerps was President of I HATE SIZZLE CLUB, I was VP. Sizzle has turned it up and I now disband, with RnT's permission, the club.
Of course this is just my opinion

Thanks for posting this Kyle Cactus. Sizzle's performance definitely got lost in the wake of the loss..
