"What if the Ravens had passed on Kyle Boller and kept that year’s second round pick and the following year’s No. 1? The Ravens could have then selected WR Anquan Boldin in ’03 and then in ’04 DT Vince Wolfork, freeing up that second round pick for a player other than DT Dwan Edwards and the third round pick could have been Matt Schaub instead of Devard Darling.
In the free agent market the Ravens may have altered their own history had they opted for Brad Johnson instead of Elvis Grbac. What if they had spent money on a tackle other than Leon Searcy? Could the Ravens have used the money allocated to Mike Anderson in a more productive way?"

Wow, that's carrying the old 'what if?" routine a bit far. There are an awful lot of events in that sequence.

Hit a pool ball and it hits another ball, and that one hits a third...etc. It can happen, and it does routinely. But the chain of events set forth above is like hitting sixteen pool balls all at once, and predicting the outcome.

It's the same ridiculous logic broadcasters use when they say "Oh if they had gone for 2 in the 3rd quarter they'd be winning" thus assuming that every event afterwards would have stayed the same in spite of the fact that the strategy and logic of the other team would have been different if the score was different. As for the gist of the article, Decosta has already made it clear that Pashos is easily replaceable through a deep draft while Mughelli will be much tougher to replace. And a great article on here a couple of days ago spelled out how tough it will be to afford the franchise tag on AD. Lots of restructuring and releases to fit that under the cap. Is it worth it long term? I'm beginning to think we're better off without AD.
The Steelers: Still looking for a legit Super Bowl victory.

You guys are both reinforcing my point. That hindsight when it comes to player movement and personnel decisions is 20-20. Tell me which of these decisions weren't criticized at some point.

I was just trying to reinforce that when you consider the big picture and the success the Ravens have had, should they opt to pass on AD or Pashos or Mughelli or Johnson or all of them, the organizational track record speaks for itself and we all should trust in their judgement.

Yet I'm sure that if any of these players fail to return because they don't fit the "right player, right price" philosophy, the criticism will follow.

Long term my money is on Ozzie and ED. And that's what the column is really about.
