    Obama = Bush

    Interesting reads. These articles basically say that Obama has the same stance now on Habeus Corpus that GWBush had after 9/11 in regards to "terrorist" detainees as well as warrant-less wiretapping. Wasn't that one of Obama's biggest platforms against Bush during the campaign?

    I agree that Obama's stance on warrantless wiretapping and Habeus Corpus has been disappointing. There is also the issue of CIA torture which I think is at the core of America no longer being able to be a moral compass in the world. Someone needs to be held responsible for doing an act that has been instrumental throughout history in separating the U.S. from so many other barbaric regimes. I tend to believe that Obama is willing to make the policy change towards torture and then move on letting bygones be bygones since there doesn't appear to be much international outcry. I am not sure if that is the correct baramoter.

    I don't think many people are "justifying" much in these areas. I think it is too early in his administration to form any clear analysis as to why he has chosen to go in these directions. He has been pretty thorough so far with other significant campaign platforms such as middle class tax cuts, reaching out to the international community in a way that is unprecedented, going through the budget line by line and identifying trillions of dollars, closing Gitmo, ending torture and shifting the troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. He has also made strong gestures so far about health care reform, entitlement reform, education etc. which I think in time have a good chance of being realized.

    I don't think many people voted for Obama to end wiretapping or alleged terrorist prisoner rights and for those who did i think it is pretty realistic to think closing Gitmo, ending torture and shifting the emphasis of the war from Iraq to Afhganistan are significant gains.
