Re: We need to finish and replace Stover

i have been saying for 2 years that maybe its time to find a replacement.he cant kick the ball to the middle of the endzone on kickoffs.from what i am getting we need to get him inside the 10 for him to have the leg to make the kick.

its been a nice ride stover but its time you go!!!!

    I'm waiting.

Because unless they have done it, your statement is worth less than a two week old sports page.

45 yards in a pressure situation is not a chip shot. Anywhere.
    Relax dude

I contend that any of those kickers they bring into training camp to challenge the incumbent and don't make the team, could go 85% inside the 40. Its the ones that can go 75%+ from 40-49 are the ones that make the squad. I bet Czech could go 85% inside the 40. Remember we brought in Nedney off the scrap heap to challenge Stover. He became our kickoff specialists, and PK for long FG attempts. He was later let go by the Ravens, but became the Titans & 49ers PK. You can always find someone.... now whether they are as good as Matt ??? We just havent look since Matt is probably 95% inside 40, which is probably in the Top 3 ever in the NFL. His 40-49 % has been getting worse and is to the point of alarming now.

Ok beyond 40, any FG isnt a chip shot, but a 45 yard miss on a calm, warm day on your home turf is just plain bad.

The only thing I will say about the kick is that it seemed like despite taking the Time Out to prevent the run off they still were rushed on the field....I mean if your going to kick anyway, why don't you take the 10 second run off (Going down to 4 seconds) burn the timeout....and then kick...so you know your kicking from the beginning.

Thats the only defense I can build for Stover.

Re: We need to finish and replace Stover

I find myself being half with you, half with others on this Camden.

The half I am with you on is that I don't understand why Harbaugh didn't take at least as shot at something. If he was going to elect to kick from that distance anyway, and you're not taking the 10 second run-off, then run SOMETHING. Throw the ball into the endzone. Throw it to the sidelines. If it's incomplete, then you've given up a down and a couple ticks off the clock and you're kicking. If it's picked off then if they don't return it for a score the Titans gets a couple seconds to try and run a play.

Didn't we fire Billick over decisions like this?

Now the part I disagree with you Camden on, is that this was some extraordinary kick. Stover's kick had the distance. He just didn't have the accuracy. But on a day like Sunday with that weather, and with him kicking the ball off out of the endzone, distance wasn't a problem for him. He just flat out missed the goalposts, period.

Yes, he did miss. He's human, and getting older. No dispute there. But he's had these early season slumps before and still went 26-for-31 or so and a pretty damn good year.

These people who want a new kicker in Owings Mills this week are dumping the baby out with the bathwater. They are probably the same short=sighted people who wanted Ray off the team after he disappeared from sight during the 2005 season.

well i will say i NEVER would say let ray go.i love the guy!!!!

now stover on the other hand, well thats a different story.ray ray has been performing at a high level from 1996 and on.stover is decreasing in his abilities.when was the lasttime he kicked a kick off deep into the endzone on a calm day???im not just looking at the missed field goals here.its a much bigger picture.matt was great but there comes a time you have to let go.sorry matt BYE BYE BYE

Re: We need to finish and replace Stover

I feel like I am the only one on this board who supports Matt Stover. Maybe it's because for 13 years he has been "Mr. Automatic". Maybe it's because I have done some kicking myself on a school and club level and know just how hard it is to nail 40+ yard kicks through an 18-foot space - consistently, in different field and wind conditions. It isn't easy.

So here's one of the very best, sitting at 4-7 early in the season and you are ready to cut him. Swell.

Matt will more than make you forget these two kicks by the end of the season, and the cut Matt talk will stop.

BTW, I believe all of his kickoffs yesterday were to or beyond the goal line. That is standard for NFL kickers.

no they werent buddy and when i say kick into the endzone im talking about a TOUCHBACK.and seriously dude,im not sure your getting the point we are trying to make.im so proud of you that you kicked some field goals when you were 16.sit back feel like a man and smoke another cigar.im sure your wall is lit up with trophies because of all the championships you won making game winning kicks from 47 yards out.

but the point is stover is getting OLDER!!!!his skills and leg strengh are begining to decrease.if we are a rebuilding team then it doesnt hurt to bring in a young guy with a powerful leg to get some experience in game situations and hey maybe you never know,we might find another top kicker.....

if you dont mind me asking since you have some experience would you wanna go try out.shit whats the worst they will say?

Are you always such a dick, or only about things you really have no clue over?

I don't think the problem is with Stover's leg strength -- ironically enough, his kickoffs actually seem to be landing deeper than the past two seasons. The problem is that through four games, he is missing field goals that he usually makes. I don't expect him to be perfect through a whole season, but three misses in four games is very un-Stover like.

And I'm not for cutting Stover, and maybe someone in this thread has, but I don't recall seeing that. I'm just pointing out that it's unusual for him to miss FGs of this length, and that it could be a problem all season. Maybe it's true that the problem is that they sped up his timing, which seems totally unnecessary, since it's not as if he's been struggling the past two or so years.

I sure hope this doesn't turn into a case of over-coaching someone who didn't need it.

how am i a "dick"?i am making a point of my opinion.the thread is partially about replacing stover.if your gonna tell me i dont know what i am talking about then prove your point.do you not have one???

as for me making comments about you kicking whenever or where ever it is you use to kick, take a joke...have a sense of humor.you put on here about how you use to kick but the thread is about replacing stover.you said people might not understand how hard it is to kick.who cares!!!!stover is 40....im sure you know that its time to find youth at that position.

Re: We need to finish and replace Stover

I'm disenchanted with Stover's performance thusfar, but hopeful he'll quickly return to form. After all his years of faithful service to our franchise, he's earned a certain degree of slack from me.

I do understand, however, if others don't choose to be lenient, given the fact that our last two losses have come by 3 points in games where Matt has missed FGs...

    UNLEASH THE BEASTS!!!!

Matt Stover ha been the one bright light in the Ravens offense for 10 years. Can we give him a break at see if he comes back strong like he has in the past. He did not lose the Titans game.

  14. Re: We need to finish and replace Stover

Pretty freakin' sad that we still have to be discussing kicking field goals to win games rather then touchdowns.

We got to be one of a very few teams that still don't score touchdowns in games, and put enormous pressure on an ageing defense and place kicker to bail us out.

    Pathetic!!

With that being said, if we're going to continue to operate this way, then yes, it might be time to start looking at younger options to relieve Stover since his range is not what it really needs to be for a team that seems to attempt to win alot of its games by field goals.
    Will Die A Ravens Fan!!
