Sam Koch really improved
He boomed it in the preseason, and right now he is #4 in the NFL/#3 in the AFC with 48.4 yards per punt (about , but he is #2 in the NFL/#1 in the AFC with a net average of 44.0, only.1 yard behind the NFL leader!
His average punt is just shy of 5 yards better than last year, and the net is a full 8 yards better than last year - that's a ton! Think of that in the field position battle...
That's good special teams and good punting...

Re: Sam Koch really improved
Using yardage as a measurable is way overrated. The fact that both he and Stover kept pinning Cribbs on the sideline is way more important.

Re: Sam Koch really improved
Actually if you think about it net yardage is not overrated, and it actually is the litmus test of the punt, its hang time, and the return. You can boom it 60 yards but if the other teams returns it 40 you have a net 20. Pinning Cribbs is directly captured through net yardage, as would letting him run one back right up the middle. No other way coaches have to measure the success of that.
Nothing overrated about net yardage at all, ST coaches watch it closely. And 8 yards improvement there is a lot. It defines your success in field position. That's why the networks always show that stat "average starting position" because as we saw yesterday from both teams, drives starting at your opponent's 45 are a much better opportunity than from your own 15.

And people were questioning our hiring of a ST coach!
