Yahoo Sports shows some respect to Boller, Ravens

"It's still a harrowing sight to see Kyle Boller stepping in and taking over a game, but you have to give the kid credit. He's done an impressive job in spot duty this season in place of Steve McNair. The question is: What are the Ravens going to do with Boller long term? His deal is up after 2007, and he still looks like he deserves a crack at the starting job when McNair hangs it up"


Thats my thought exactly. Hopefully we extend Boller with a contract that is reasonable for him and for us, with some performance incentives for when he takes over when McNair is finished.

I think we should do our best to re-sign Boller when his contract is up, and when McNair calls it quits or just can't go any more, we should give Boller another shot at the starting job and bring in a capable veteran in case Boller fails. We all agree that Boller's biggest problems stem not from his athletic talent but from his mental attitude during football games. We took a project QB and handed him the job from day one, behind an offensive line that was built for the running game, throwing to receivers with hands of stone. And he was wildly inconsistent. Shocker. We dump all the pressure of leading a team with Super Bowl talent onto his shoulders, and he turns into a nervous wreck every time he drops back to pass. Stunning. Now we've made him the backup behind one of the calmest QBs the league has ever seen, putting the pressure on someone else and infusing confidence in the whole team. What happens? He played pretty well during the preseason and has now done a decent job in two extended relief appearances. I'm not saying he's capable of lifting a team on his shoulders in the Super Bowl and beating a top defense, not right now anyway. But the nerves and pressure should settle down with two things: experience and maturity.

It was definitely a mistake to try to develop him on the field. Just look at guys like Philip Rivers and Tony Romo this year, first-time starters who got to sit and watch and learn and practice before getting their shot. We might just get a second chance with Boller, and a cheap one at that; retaining him won't cost us a mega-contract unless he turns out to be mega-successful and insists on a huge extension. If our fans can stop looking at him as a draft blunder and start looking at him as one of the better backups in the league, one who could use another shot at our starting job, then we might come out of this with a huge bargain.

That I think is even the bigger key. Having that experienced and capable #2 is going to be huge if that indeed happens.

Cases in point:

Look what happened to the Carolina Panthers. Everyone wanted to know how good Chris Wenke was. Well, they got their answer down there. Not good!

On the other hand look at the Eagles. Just when you thought Jeff Garcia was done, he has helped bring the Eagles in earshot of the playoffs since McNabb went down.

Now look at the Vikings. It appears that Brad Johnson's days are over as they just announced Tavarius Jackson was going to start the next two games. Brad Childress actually said Jackson gives them the best chance to win, which has to be a gut shot to Brad. But Tavarius is a rookie. It's not going to be all roses.

If the Ravens decide to try Boller again, and that also means Boller wants to stay, they HAVE to have a veteran backup behind him.
