    HOWEVER

You didn't even see Billick ATTEMPT to run a real screen with the o-line pulling and out front blocking. EVER.

The Pre-season game was HUGE progress.

Whether or not we have the talent to pull it off, we are moving forward with a scheme that isn't antiquated and outdated, and that is good.

The routes our recievers are running are far better. There was a pass to Bergen that Boller threw that was a gain of 8 or 9, and I couldnt' believe it, because with Billick that'd be thrown to a TE at the line of scrimage.

We still need a true #1 and a tackle, but otherwise we can make this happen.
You sat here for 2 years saying Billick WAS running the deep routes but McNair's noodle arm wouldn't attempt to throw it. Remember saying how he always checked down?

Now you are saying they didn't run those routes.

This is the revisionist history that seems pretty obvious to me.

We need TWO tackles and at least one more legit WR. O, and a QB.

It gets uglier. From today's practice:

    http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/spor...g_notes_8.html

    * Quarterbacks Troy Smith and rookie Joe Flacco split most of the reps during full-team drills today, and both faltered badly. Smith was intercepted three times (by linebacker Ray Lewis, free safety Ed Reed and strong safety Dawan Landry) in his first eight pass attempts, and cornerback Samari Rolle nearly squeezed in another one. The defense sniffed out a Flacco flea-flicker, and Flacco would have been sacked by linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo and defensive tackle Salomon Solano. Kyle Boller took a few snaps and connected on short passes, while misfiring on his deep throws.

    * In addition to the combined sack by Ayanbadejo and Solano, linebackers Jarret Johnson and Antwan Barnes and defensive end Trevor Pryce would have sacked Smith. The offense was also called for false start three times.

Did bring my giddy feeling from the preseason game down to earth after reading that earlier.

It maybe who isn't the best QB,just who isn't the worst.Maybe its something in the water that affects Raven QB's.
Put the smile back on your face. This is a 60 minute ball game.

    O wait.

Were we discussing this with the idea that either of these 2 were competent NFL QBs?

My bad. I've been discussing this knowing that both were backups at best.

Maybe; but look at all of his physical attributes - SIZE, ARM STRENGTH, CONFIDENCE etc.etc. If given the opportunity, I'm sure he could probably even throw the football through the uprights from 70 yds out, just like another former QB of the future!

I still contend that this offense will continue to struggle in the regular season due to the talent.

I have to agree with the majority...the offense may not end up being BETTER than last year's version, but it's sure different.

I have no doubts it will be different.

I just don't think Thursday's game was this earth shattering difference that others seem to think it was.

Earth shattering? No...but it was nice to see presnap motion and screens and an audible called...you know that like you I was a Billick guy and thought he shouldn't have been let go, but the one thing that drove me nuts was how he sucked all rhythm out of our offense, at times intentionally (against strong offensive teams to keep them off the field)....it was nice to see some up tempo stuff, even if the net result is the same.

    Gotcha.

    I can go with that.

I guess I was a bit surprised at the overall reaction by alot of people. It was almost as if ANYTHING different got blown a bit out of proportion. JMO.

I get that people are excited for something new and I'm sure we'll see it unfold in the upcoming months.

Some people might spontaneously combust if last Thursday got them this excited.

I agree that the offense may not be any better than last year - and may possibly be worse - but what I saw that I really, really liked was the tempo they had getting in and out of the huddle and up to the LOS. The OL was actually sprinting to the LOS.

Too often during Billick's time here, they would have to burn a TO or get a delay penalty.

Also - albeit for one week - the lack of dumb penalties has nice to see.

IMO, had Billick been better able to correct those issues, he might still be around.

So, while the offense may not be better, they hopefully won't be making things worse for themselves as they seemed to do too often in the past.

Absolutely. It'd be nice for once to see the offense not beat itself...

Lack of talent is another thing. But stupid mistakes and terrible play calling were tiring...
