The socialist state of Maryland wants to ban youth football

I guess Maryland Big Brother Democrats would rather have boys run around in dresses questioning their gender instead of playing in organized football games. I would like to see statistics on head injuries in youth football. I played for the Randallstown Rams Optimist football team and High School football and I do not remember anyone ever having a head injury. I'm sure it does happen, but I need to see the frequency. Another example of the pussification of America.

We were discussing this in a different thread.

On one hand, it pisses me off a great deal because - once again - a politician is trying to tell everyone what's bad for them and what they shouldn't do. Why even have free will? Clearly they know best...

On the other hand, I get why a lot of parents would be hesitant to let their kids play tackle football. It's a dangerous sport and the more we learn about head trauma, the more we should be informed about it.

Wicked- as I said, I would like to see some statistics on youth football injuries. I guess the Dems would prefer kids stay inside and play video games and get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Football is a better alternative than hanging out with the wrong type of kids getting in trouble.

Obviously, with the new light that's been shed onto head injuries and the destructive damage repetitive concussions cause to the brain, this ban seems rather logical, even more so, considering the brains of developing children are more vulnerable to the effects of mild traumatic brain injuries than that of adults. Now, I may disagree with the ban because football was a big staple of my life growing up and left a great impression on me having played the sport for over a decade. But I understand the spirit behind the Bill and why it's being considered. More and more studies are revealing that repetitive concussions can be absolutely detrimental to individuals long-term brain health. So, if this Bill minimizes the risk that our youth are being exposed to than 100% it's the right move. Has nothing to do with dress wearing or sissification of America you dumb asshole. But since you want to start a thread sounding like a jerk off here are some stats for you to chew on:

A study provided by the National Academy of Sciences has found that High School football players are nearly twice as likely to sustain a concussion than college football players. Now consider concussions make up almost 8% of all injuries in college football.

You might want to bust out your calculator because there are currently more than 1 million high school students playing football across the country. Keeping up?

Less than 6% of high school players make it to the college level....

Less than 2% of NCAA eligible players get drafted into the NFL....

Less than .09% of HS seniors ever make it to the PROs.

Which means....over 90%+ of our youth who currently play football, will never be rewarded financially the way Professional players are compensated for the inherit risks that come with playing the sport. So, what's the incentive of exposing kids under 14 to repetitive hits to the head?

Considering how shit our Nation's educational system is, the last thing we need to do is promote even more unnecessary brain damage then what this country already has. Have some empathy for the kids man. There are other team sports that can provide the same message and benefits that football does and carry less risk...

Hell, flag football can teach 6 year olds the same fundamentals as contact football. It should be a gradual, progressive transition into contact anyway. 7, 8, 9 10, year olds don't need to be running head first into each other, especially if there's a risk it could be impairing their brain development.

You probably won’t see a lot of youth football stats. Regardless, that doesn’t matter.

What they should be doing is teaching fundamental tackling skills and researching/developing better equipment.

When I was a kid and played Pop Warner, we used to call it “getting your bells rung”. It happened quite a bit to me and to others. Not saying I would have stopped playing, but I think my parents may have had a different perspective if they knew as much about head trauma related to football as we do now.

Sorry to get your panties in such a bunch. When I was a kid, the neighborhood played tackle football just about every day up in our field if we were not playing in an organized league. We did not play with helmets or pads. We were typical kids and it was physical. The only injury I can remember is some guy got tackled near the edge of the woods and got a stick up his rectum, which he had to have surgically removed. I will never forget his screams of pain while limping home with the stick still lodged up there. No shit. Even if they ban organized football , who is to say that will stop kids from playing football without the proper equipment just like we did. I guarantee you, it would not have stopped us from playing. I believe, with all we know about concussions these days, it is up to the parents to decide if their kids should play football. I believe that playing organized football, with the proper equipment, with coaches that teach proper techniques, is safer than your typical neighborhood pick-up games. Parents would have to weigh the dangers of football verses the benefits of playing a team game, building relationships, respecting authority for a common goal. I do realize that kids are a lot different today then they were when I was a kid. By the way, they also want to ban several "aspects of soccer, Lacrosse, and hockey, from public sports facilities".

Yep, he was rushed to the hospital, where it was removed. He couldn't play football for a while after that, but he never mentioned that he had any permanent complications from that incident. It was just one of the freak accidents. Every time I watch the Seinfeld rerun of the episode with fusilli Jerry, I think of that day. it was "A million to one shot"

We’ve said on the other post Carroll that it should be the parents choice. Everyone knows concussions are bad. But it should be for the parents to decide not the damn state.

Lax, yep, I just read all of the posts over there on the subject. Most had the same position as I do to various degrees. Government should stay out of it and responsible parents should make the decision for their kids, but should monitor what the coaches are teaching. Good discussions.

Yeah. Some people here can really have an educated discussion about a lot of topics. Others...not so much. Lol.

I agree with this a lot... I dont like the idea of a "government ban"... but I wouldnt let my kid play tackle football until HS, when he's old enough for me to have a real conversation about potential brain injury.....

I dont like the idea of the government forcing this issue... but I work in healthcare, and the negligence of parents is beyond shocking. I hate to say it, but there really is a huge portion of the population that cant be trusted to raise their children. For christ's sake we're still trying to explain why kids should be getting vaccines... but its cool Porn stars know more about healthcare than we do at this point in society
    Burn it down
