Re: Joe Flacco and Marc Trestman off to a great start
Wasn't kubiak's ZBS, Harbaugh used it the year before and it was disastrous, The Oline coach from Philadelphia was brought in to teach it to the oline. Kubiak benefited from it. Saying he was the best OC, compared to the others, yes, but they weren't that great to compare to. Kubiak cost Ravens games with his play calling and won some with Forsett running good. forsett was running good because the Oline finally figured out how to work with the ZBS. Year before, didn't happen, the opposing defense was in the backfield just as flacco was handing off the ball. Flacco was still throwing well to receivers that dropped the ball or couldn't separate. He actually had time to do that last year.
We'll see about manning, most fans know that he was the general on the field and his OC was just another soldier there to support him. Kubiak may not like that, but also may just take the ride like other manning coaches did. It's a win win for him, if the team loses, it's manning's fault. Kubiak gets another year while Peyton retires.
's
As for best OC, Ravens made playoffs on other teams losing in the last weeks, great OC don't depend on that. Kubiak may be able to get good yardage from QB's and RB's, but his win/lose record was average. Getting fired is not the sign of a great coach. Kubiak and lovie Smith must both be great coaches, LOL. Along with the others coaches with time in the nfl.
Kubiak is over rated as a coach and fans will see that this year.

Re: Joe Flacco and Marc Trestman off to a great start
No he didn't. Kubes brought in his own dumb down version of the ZBS. That's why
they did so well. Castillo has one of the most difficult ones to master. He had
some of the biggest and best o-lines in the NFL up in Philly that mastered his
system.
From the Sun:
His zone-blocking scheme will presumably be different than the one that Juan Castillo implemented last season. Kubiak’s Broncos and Texans made their hay running their take on the outside zone stretch runs and they used knee-buckling cut blocks to open up back-side cut block lanes much more than the Ravens did in 2013.
Even Pees laughed when talking about Kubes system which goes back to his days
in Denver with Shannahan. All of a sudden, there's a RB you never heard of getting
1,000 yards.
Last year, Forsett was the latest one doing that.
The Ravens’ zone runs were largely ineffective due to a combination of factors -- scheme, poor execution by the offensive line and a sharp drop-off in performance from both three-time Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice and his backup, Bernard Pierce -- and the Ravens averaged just 3.1 yards per carry overall.
I'll add my own reasons in like certain people like Gino and Oher being too dumb to
learn the ZBS. The line assignments, usually issued by the Center were given to
Yanda, RG. Oher stood around on plays because he didn't know where to go in the
ZBS which is one of the many reasons Ravens let him go.
HARBs said he had Gino sitting in the first row of Castillo's line meetings while
he stood in the back to make sure he took notes. Gino is gone too.
The offense did so well last year HARBs made sure that Test would agree to use
it this year and he said he would and used it before in SF and other places. It
also helped to have Wagner at RT who became one of the best under the system
and Zuttah who was much better than Gino but played while injured which hurt
his game.
Getting back to Zorn, he could coach and Joe loved him. CAM was so jealous that
Joe went to him all the time and even accused Zorn of insubordination when
he got Zorn fired.
Here's the rest of that link on Kube's ZBS.

Re: Joe Flacco and Marc Trestman off to a great start
Got your history wrong. Castillo came here a year before Kubiak and he taught the ZBS and it was a total failure but their were a multitude of possible reasons. Castillo was certainly fingered as the primary cause and got the rap as being brought in because he was a Harbaugh buddy. That all quieted down last year because the ZBS with Kubiak and Castillo ran like a Swiss watch. Credit for the ZBS goes to its author Shannihan, who has always said that teams who want to adopt it have to be patient because it takes at least a year to learn.
Interesting. It almost seems like a long-term plan was in the works. Or still is.

Re: Joe Flacco and Marc Trestman off to a great start
Calling Kubes version of the ZBS or the WCO as "dumbed down" may be one of the most dumbed down things ever said around here and totally backwards to history, both during his time here and his previous stint in Denver
http://russellstreetreport.com/2014/...ubiak-offense/
It's a multilayered system that makes Walsh's version look boring since he adds in the element of a vertical passing game.
Dumbed down, my ass.

They call those consecutive run plays against base D for a reason and that is so the D respects it. That makes play action work. They're willing to be patient.

Re: Joe Flacco and Marc Trestman off to a great start
Zone BS or no Zone BS - my gripe with the Ravens is that they still haven't figured out that its a fools errand to run when the opposing team has 8 guys in the box. Yet they do that time after time after time - and usually get themselves in a hole. When they get in a hole they turn to Joe to get them out of the hole by opening up the passing game.
If they just figured out how to put a dynamic creative game plan together and let Joe do what Joe does best. When Joe opens up the throwing game the running backs usually start to break off big game changing runs.

Re: Joe Flacco and Marc Trestman off to a great start
Have not found a great OC yet, maybe trestman will be the one. kubiak was good for yardage, just couldn't do a solid game plan for every opposing team. handled the average teams , but came up short on good teams. If Ravens had played 60 minutes of dominating offense for every game, the stats and wins would have been better.
When Flacco and company get it together this year(I hope), that division title will stand out. Tougher schedule this year, if Trestman and Flacco win more this year, last years team was just getting it started.

Re: Joe Flacco and Marc Trestman off to a great start
Think again HR. Our guys couldn't even get these steps down under Castillo.
Look at all these steps alone:
1. drive step
2. lead step
3. slide step
4. drop step
5. bucket step.
They learned Kube's system didin't they? They never learned Castillo's and the culpable
ones are gone like Gino, Shipley and Oher.
It was much easier
to learn than Castillo's. People that know football know that.Last edited by AirFlacco; 05-22-2015 at 12:56 AM.

Joe Flacco and Marc Trestman off to a great start
Kubiak has to clean up Castillo's mess, not the other way around, because he's a better coach not because his system is "dumbed down".
But keep believing nonsense if you so choose. It's never held you back before. And I completely and totally agree with your last sentence.
