Re: contract year guys
Upshaw is likely to price himself out of Baltimore. Yanda, KO, and Tucker are all far more valuable to us. I really dislike the belief that we have to let either Yanda or KO go... I think they're both going to be worth their money and I hope we can find a way to retain both of them. Yanda may be getting older but he's one of the best in the NFL and could sustain that for a few more years, more than enough to justify keeping him around.

Re: contract year guys
Kruger also had 9 sacks and iirc a handful more in the playoffs splitting time with other guys.
Sacks = big money.
Upshaw has 3 sacks in 3 years. He is also playing behind Doom and Suggs and now Za Smith is going to get playing time as well. He's not going to have many opportunities to generate a ton of sacks.
Upshaw is a good player, but I don't see him pricing himself out of Baltimore.

Re: contract year guys
Upshaw is a role player. You need guys like him, but when a guy like him hits FA, you wish him well and let someone else overpay. Better to have his replacement either already be on the roster (best case), be drafted right after the role player leaves as a FA, or get a value FA later in FA or even after June 1.

Re: contract year guys
Pernell MchPhee had 6 sacks in his first 12 NFL games and I distinctly recall him owning the shit out of Andrew Whitworth on the final 2 snaps of the Cincy game here in 2011 that ended the game.
And that was as an inside pass rushing specialist before he wore down at the end of his rookie year.
So hell yes, I thought it was beyond...beyond obvious that McPhee was a hell of a pass rusher if used right.
His second year was bad because we tried to make him a full time starter as a 5 technique and his knees just couldn't handle it.
His third year was a bit of a lost year IMHO because he struggled to adjust to being an OLB.Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

Re: contract year guys
That was my point, Hightower has now equalled Upshaw so he no longer had the I've got a ring- you don't edge.
Upshaw will never undo the 1st round/2nd round difference.
The only competitive ground now is I make now make more than you (which he hasn't had due to slotting), so we will absolutely see contract year production.
LB Dont'a Hightower has had his 5th year option exercised by the Cheatriots for 2016 he gets $7.751 million
Upshaw I'm sure is aware of that .... waiting to see him turn up at camp in the best shape ever, waiting to see him unveil pass rush refinements, waiting to see him do everything he can for a year that gets him a big payday ... then we will see what shape he turns up in their camp in.
Right now it seems to be about the money, but it is more than money for money's sake, just outlining another motivating factor with a former National Championship LB teammate at Alabama, playing 4 years together
Courtney did get the BCS National Championship Game MVP in 2012 over Hightower, only to see Hightower go 1st round on him.at one point of my life I was exactly Pi years old

Re: contract year guys
We are all going on memory here. My memory is that while JJ did get replaced at times, he also was on the field a lot on 3rd-and-5 or more. Upshaw has never been on the field in that kind of situation that I recall, except as NT in that weird dime alignment we threw out a few times.

Re: contract year guys
Upshaw has seen the field plenty as an OLB on 3rd down. I distinctly remember him falling into coverage (the flats) on more than a few occasions. He actually didnt do as bad as i expected in that role either, despite his limitations.
there was a play in particular in the playoffs where i believe he was on Antonio Brown on a 3rd down running down the sideline. Hes done it, maybe not a large percentage but he has, not unlike JJ. i dont have the snap counts for JJ but seeing as Upshaw played 60+% of the snaps last year I cant fathom JJ playing much more. I think their roles and even how they were used is very similar (minus the NT part by Upshaw).-JAB

Contract Year Guys: I'll say it again - Will Hill. I predict he will really shine with better players around him this time; not that he wasn't good last year. If he keeps his off-field act together, he is an important cog going forward and will cost $$ from 2016 on. I expect the Ravens to make a strong effort to keep him.

Re: contract year guys
I would love to see him stay with Baltimore, but if he has another good year, he's going to be expensive and I don't think the Ravens keep him.
Hopefully by then Terrance Brooks will have emerged a little and can jump in beside Kendrick Lewis. Or, who knows, maybe Matt Elam FINALLY looks the part of a round-1 pick? <wishful thinking>Disclaimer: The content posted is of my own opinion.

Re: contract year guys
Id be leery about keeping Hill. I just think hes going to have more off field issues sooner than later. Id rather get a 3rd or 4th for him and just invest in another S in the draft, assuming Brooks and/or Elam dont work out.

Re: contract year guys
Hill has what it takes to be an elite safety, FS or SS. PFF had him as 3rd best safety in the league in 2013 and 14th best last year. In the league. Elite FS (his natural position) are very hard to find and take time to develop. Current signs are that Hill goes bowling and spends evenings with his daughter. So, we hope that he gets it that he is on maybe his last chance for a big career with $$$. He says he is very grateful to Ozzie. If he plays well as everyone expects, he should be in line for a market contract but with relatively little guaranteed, IMO. FS is too important a position to keep shuttling around bargain newcomers in the hopes that one of them works out, especially when you already have a really good one.
We don't know how well Kendrick Lewis will work out. As of now, we are fairly confident he will be better than Darian Stewart, but beyond that we don't know much. Brooks has to recover and then show how much he can develop. (I think Brooks will work out.) Elam is so bad he is on the bubble - he should not yet be mentioned as a competitor for a starting safety job. But if you consider that if one of the three of Lewis, Brooks, Elam should really blossom in 2015, you still have Hill to complement him at whatever safety position needs to be filled.
