Dres Anderson
Dres-Anderson.jpg
6'1 187lbs
Hands: 9 3/8
When considering Wide Receivers Dres Anderson was a player that fell off the map in the draft process. His name has started to get some buzz again due to his Pro Day workout. Obviously recovering from the torn mcl he's not completely back at full speed just yet, but reportedly at his pro day he ran between 4.35 and 4.52 pending the source.
Anderson is the son of former NFL WR, Willie "Flipper" Anderson, has great bloodlines for the position. He has the talent of a late 2nd to 3rd round pick but will probably drop due to the injury. I think he would be a good value selection either with pick 122, 125, or 136. I want to focus on the special trait he could provide a team and then on some problems that need correcting.
All of the games watched were from 2013.
Special Trait - Bombs Away
Let me go ahead and get some stuff I didn't like on tape out of the way. His short area game needs some work. The drag is ok, but I don't see him running a lot of outs, curls, comebacks, hitches. Based on what the three games I watched, if that were all to it, I'd come away thinking that none of this is a part of his portfolio.
Needless to say, initially I had the same thoughts about Devin Smith, but when I turned on Smith's tape, he did run some hitches, curls. Neither seemed to run a great deal of digs, comebacks, outs so I leave thinking deep game player. Now of course, they probably have these as a part of their arsenal but the tape available does not show that.

He does show awareness to track the ball in the air as shown here.

Not only does he track the football, he also makes a great adjustment. He's also seen doing this against UCLA 2014, where he tracks, adjusts and makes a play between two defenders here:

He's got good speed to get past defenders and he tracks and adjusts to the deep pass very well.
Anderson shows good burst and speed in space.

He gets up to speed fairly quick and I can see why the Utes used him a lot on Jet motion and Jet quick end arounds. He also shows off some good cutting ability on this play. I'm sure that got affected by the knee injury and will take some time to come back.
Some Problem Areas
When it comes to press coverage Anderson struggles at times, allowing the defensive back to get to his body and stymie him off the line.

As the clip above demonstrates, this will be something that he will need to correct and it is something that can be corrected.
Another area where Anderson could use some refinement is with concentration drops. He had a high drop rate and they always seem to be on passes where he is either a) about to get hit; or b) he's trying to run into the green pastures without first catching the football.

Now while one might say the ball was placed a little bit behind him, this is a catchable football. He has to make that catch. If he catches this he probably could elude the safety and trot into the endzone. But it seems to me the presence of the safety is what broke his focus. He let that pass get into his body rather than attacking it.
Another example of this is here.

Notice here you have Shane Skov and a Safety in the vicinity. This is just me, but it seems like he was worried about getting hit here and it broke his concentration.
Final Thoughts
Anderson reminds me somewhat of Torrey and Devin Smith. They all have the speed to run past corners. Devin and Dres seem to be better at tracking and making adjustments on the deep pass. But with all three if the deep ball is what you're looking for they all seem to have that. Anderson has some kinks in the short game that need working out and I think those types of drops are frustrating to see but they seem to be common with these types of receivers who excel at the deep game.

Re: Dres Anderson
Anderson is another intriguing WR to me. Engram was present at his pro day, so he's someone to keep an eye on in the middle rounds.

Re: Dres Anderson
Dres Anderson had the 3rd worst drop rate in the country out of 132 wide receivers. No thanks.

Re: Dres Anderson
I mentioned that in the post. But again, while it is something to pay attention to, sometimes those types of charts are a little bit deceiving. You have to ask which routes did he drop the most passes and what are you going to be asking the guy to do? Why is he dropping passes? Is it because of bad hands? Or is it because he's afraid he's about to get hit? Is it because of concentration? Charts give us a lot of information, but I don't think they are necessarily a means of writing a guy off. And even looking at the chart, while he has a high drop rate, he still caught 50% of the passes thrown to him, which when you look at the others on the list, the discrepancy is a lot larger.
