Its gotta be near freakout status over there. What is causing players of really just that one team to just hang it up in bunches like this? Truly odd.

They're around each other and could be friends. I wouldn't be shocked if one of them talked about head injuries which influenced the others, except for Justin Smith who is 36

And I am not sure that is not true to some degree. Since all of this has been going down, I have wondered if the players see a major down-year, figuring that they would rather save the body from punishment and then see how it plays out next year. Most have a long-range plan if they decide to stay away, but a sabbatical may let them reconsider the love of the game and the status of their physical health.
