Point Spread 101 -- If we're favored by 9.5 that is basically saying the other team would have to spot the Ravens those points in order to break even .... meaning one team is BETTER THAN THE OTHER.

PP, me thinks you just like to argue for arguing sake. You clearly dont know the first thing about wagering.
    Uh, what?

I realize exactly how it works.

You post every week about the spread and wonder why it's this and why it's that.

You think it's based on how many points the odds makers think the favorite team will win by when in fact that's not the case at all.

You keep harping on these big spreads the Ravens are getting and wondering why.

People are telling you it's because that number is number the odds makers believe will garner the most action on both sides. But you don't seem to want to believe that.

You can spout off how I don't know about wagering but it seems to me that you can't comprehend how very simple it really is.

I think you would have to be out of your mind taking the Ravens and giving up the points if you are the betting type.

They very well might cover I suppose, but there's no way in hell I'd bet on that happening.

    Point Spread 101
I think you might need odds-making remedial.

Bookies and sports books are trying to get as much action as possible split 50-50 on each team. When you bet $50 on a spread you give the house $55. If you win they pay you $105, you get back your $55 and the $50 you won. But the loser lost $55. So they take in $110 and pay out $105. THAT is how they make their money, but they are only guaranteed that if they get close to a 50-50 spread on bettting, half on each team.

They could care less who is better. They let the public determine that with their bets. If there is more action on one side or the other they move the spread to garner more action the other way.

I think we're saying the same thing in different ways ....

I agree with you 100%. But something determines the original number and that's team skill. That's all I was trying to say.

Yes, the final goal with books are to garner the most cash. Thats given. But that line number is indicative of a teams success and skill (or lack thereof).

With that said, from a book standpoint, I agree with most in here it's a suckers bet.

Yeah, you really do love to argue ....

First, when Vegas takes any games off the board in the 11th hour, its a big deal. Second, If "every week" you really mean 3 times, then yes you're right.

You and Yeahravens love to bitch about two things ---- everything and nothing. :insane:

Everyone here is arguing the same points in different words, yes vegas makes spreads to get equal action from both sides and in order to do that you have to put a spread that is accurate for the game ie. 9.5 for Baltimore, which inturn means we should win the game and that spread will get equal action or as close to it as possible, though I wish we were a dog we seem to play better the weeks we are dogs.

    Agreed.

And as I sit here and watch the 2000 recap on NFL Network, I am reminded about how much we were dogs and how well we stood up and whipped some butt.

We are a shell of that former team Im affraid.

Well, yes, how good the team is is reflected in the spread, but the bookmakers don't consider it. They consider betting patterns and which teams draw the most action. How good a team is will first indicate that, but also how many fans a team has and how likely they are to bet and in what amounts is also a part. But make no mistake, the bettors drive the spread. They are influenced by the talent on a team, not the bookmakers.

I dont think anyone is arguing that point.

Another thing they consider that wasnt mentioned is the injury report (although you would know it by looking at the Ravens betting line).

I will be sure to make a full report next week (just to annoy PP) when I make my bets at Borgata's book! :D

    I'll be waiting in anticipation.

BTW, I watched the thing on NFLN about 2000.

Brought a tear to my eye.

Houston, everyone here is talking about football not ponies, and if you're betting at the Borgata then you certainly aren't betting on football because horse racing is the only "sport" that you can bet on in an Atlantic City casino.
